Saw the sign at the entrance yesterday on the way home, and still there this morning. What sort of jellyfish could cause the bay to be closed? Are they that nasty or is it to protect ocean-ignorant tourists?

Never saw a beach closed in Calif. because of jellyfish, and they could get pretty thick sometimes. Big, ugly, purple muthas.:D

From the Honolulu Advertiser:

Jellyfish influx closes Hanauma Bay for second day

Advertiser Staff

Lifeguards will close Hanauma Bay for a second day today because of a box jellyfish influx, Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.
Lifeguards were still counting the number of jellyfish coming into shore.

No information on other beaches was immediately available.

Box jellyfish come into certain O'ahu beaches monthly, usually on or near a full moon.

The box jellyfish are the deadly ones, at least according to this documentary I saw on them a couple of weeks ago on the Science Channel.

The Box jellies usually show about 9 days after full moon. Hanauma had ove 150 stings yesterday and alt least 1 was serious. Not the first time and not the last time beasches here have been closed due to them. I got had last year at Bellows, they are nasty buggers.......

Hanauma Bay had actually closed earlier this year for big waves! Although it isn't common for it to close, nature happens.

Are these the same highly toxic box jellyfish that are found in Australia?

No..they are a less virulent type of box jellyfish.

They can cause respiratory distress and especially if you get stung by multiples all at once....

But not the Australian ones where one will kill you, pronto.

Saw this last night on the news. Some professor from U of H.
