still havent decided on lights. should i go with xenon, halogen or Led? should i be more concerned about the output, wattage or the burn time? im looking for two backups that will serve as primary for the moment. til i can afford my canister lights. some help thanks

A good backup will make a terrible primary, and that's more or less the end of the story.

Buy yourself a good backup or two, and if you can't afford a good primary yet just spend the $60 or so and get a regular 8 C-cell light for night dives...
