Hi all, am currently using Mares Vector Platinum BC, and the rig is abt time. am looking at Halcyon Eclipse 30lbs wing with aluminium backplate for replacement. I am abt 185lbs, dive only at tropical water, using 0.5mm suit. I normally use abt 8lbs of weight. Just want to confirm with the guys here 30lbs wing will have enough lift for me. Thanks.

i am about 160lbs and use a 3mill wetsuit. i am fine with an aluminum bp that weighs around 3 lbs. in your case you say you normally use 8lbs? if that is so may i suggest the Stainless stel backplate. it weighs 6lbs ++. you may be underweighted with the al bp. good luck

i have the eclipse 30 with alu backplate. Love the rig. Best equipment I bought.
I am around 78 kg and also use it in cold water with a dry suit. I got the alu plate because I travel.
I find 30 lift with a single tank even in cold water is still plenty of lift. Maybe for doubles an evolve might be better. I think that they are modular, and you can switch the eclipse for an evolve on the same back plate if I remember correctly.
Unless you are carrying lots of equipment I really do not think that you need more lift than 30 in tropical waters with a 0.5mm suit.
Maybe with a steel plate you will be a little over negative at depth and need more air in your BC. For tropical the alu should be fine.
The beauty with the eclipse is that it is so compact and neutral. Feels totally free and put a smile on my face on every dive with it so far.

yes you can defintely do this.

imho its better to be slightly negative at the beginning of the dive so your buoyancy all balances out when you are running very low on air. ive seen a lot of overweighted divers that have compensated by having a neutral rig only to face problems by being overly buoyant at the latter part of the dive.

I have a 30# wing for single tank diving and cannot see myself need more than that. If you plan to do deco diving with a heavy steel tank while carrying several stages then I imagine you might need more lift. If you are just using it for rec diving in warm water then I doubt you could need more. In fact I'd even cosider a smaller wing. Just get the smallest one that meets your needs because the unnecessary extra lift will just mean unnecessary extra bag that will add to drag and require greater movements to shift gas inside the wing.

I tested the rig yesterday at pool. what a feeling!!! love it. just confirm my purchase. Ecl. 30 wing with alu plate. Guys, i could sink with just the black plate. I din have to have any additional weight. I reckon i would need 2lbs of weight when i dive salt water.

felt good, so much freedoom. nice.

Welcome to BP/W diving. If you need a couple of pounds on a belt, or on the cam-strap, that's perfect.

For your application 30 lb of lift is actually a great deal more than you need.

A wing needs to beable to floa your rig at the surface, and compensate for the loss of buoyancy due to wet suit compression.

A 1/2 mm wetsiut won't loose much, maybe a few lbs.

What's your rig weigh? Just add up the parts. Tank + Plate + Regs + misc.

Assuming an AL80, full ~-5 lbs + 2 lbs for the Plate + 2 lbs for the Regs + 3-4 for Lights, etc you need only about 12-13 lbs to float your rig.

That's why 18-20 lbs wings are made.

You might want to consider a SS plate, given that you carry 8 lbs now. You might be able to get away from a weight belt. Keep in mind that your current BC maybe inherently buoyant by 3-5 lbs, a BP&W won't be.

Opps, I failed to read the last few posts. Congrats on the new gear, enjoy!
