I'm a Fish!
Hi,

I am new in the SCUBA world but advanced freediver.
I am about to buy a BCD, and I am going for the Halcyon Eclipse.
My question is how much lift I will need....????
Here i am trying to put all the information for your help:
6 feet around 150 lbs
Diving with wetsuit complete 7mm or two pieces 7mm jacket and 5.5 pants.
Will be probably using mostly Aluminium tanks

Do you think I have to go for the 30 or the 40 and what about the backplate, AL or stainless steel?

Thanks for your help

Do an advanced search for lift and single out titles only. Tobin (cool_hardware) has made the same (excellent) post at least a hundred times explaining how to determine lift required. There are literally countless posts on determining your lift.

As for the backplate, I've generally heard to get the aluminum if you plan to travel with it, if you're diving locally get the SS backplate because you can take more weight off your belt.

Now I get to post another thread on wing size and look like a complete fool! haha

Without some more specifics I'm guessing just a bit. Having said that, it's very unlikely you would need more than a 30 lbs wing.

Your wing needs to do two things: Float your rig at the surface without you (and your buoyant exposure suit) in it, and compensate for the compression of your wetsuit.

What's the maximum negative buoyancy of your rig? Just add up the parts. You can find the buoyancy figures for tanks in quite few places, google is yoru freind.

With an AL80 and a SS plate your rig is unlikley to weigh more than about 12-14 lbs, maybe a bit more if you attach additional ballast to it (weight pouches, weight plates etc.) Even so it won't be more than 30 lbs negative.

What's the initial buoyancy of your wetsuit? Rool it up, throw it in the pool and add weight until it's neutral. Here again I'm guessing, as there are lots of variables, type of neoprene, cut of the suit, age of the suit, how many times it's been compressed etc, but if I had to guess I'd say a full 7 mil on a guy your size, with booties, and hood and gloves will be about 18-22 lbs positive.

Lets say 22 lbs positive. Your suit can't loose more than 22 of buoyancy from compression.

Either way a 30 lbs wing is plenty, you could probably use a smaller wing.

thanks for the information I was not able to find by myself...
So if I used this wonderfull table right, it's looks like i need something like 15 lbs of lift and 14 lbs of lead.
Is that looking correct ?

Thanks a lot again..
