Coming next week. Not new to the island, as I usually head down 3-4 times a year.....however, I finally got off my ass and started eating right and getting in shape. I do not want to stop just because of my dive trip.

We are staying as Casa Del Mar.....does anyone know of a gym nearby that may offer a day pass for use? If so, any idea what times it opens? I like to work out early.

Thanks

They did a year ago. We went the day before we started diving. Nice place. 20-25minute walk from your hotel in a very nice time of the year to walk too!

it's still a public gym so there is the ickyness factor, we have our own basement gym for the last 9 years so I had to be extra careful not to touch my face.

Not sure where you get the ikyness factor. Very well maintained and clean. Now some of the other gyms in town can get a bit grungy.

Why waste your vacation in the gym? Go for a run on the beach, take a long swim down the coast, beach yoga, rent a bicycle, pass on the gym and enjoy the island!

Loved Ego gym when we lived on island. Great equipment and nice folks. There is a yoga studio around the corner by the cemetery that is nice too.

I always make sure to work out before my dives and get a nice 14+ hours out of the water. People looked at me funny on the liveaboard in the Bahamas while my buddy and I woke up at 6am to work out with our bands on deck.

Tip: don't try split squats while the seas are rough :)

Working out is too much like work for me to do it on vacation.

DSFDF and YMMV. :D

EGO Gym still offers day passes - I believe it's $100 pesos ($7usd) per day or you can buy a punch card for 10/20/40 visits. They don't expire an are transferable.

It is in town on 11th, 2 blocks off the water (turn right at Margaritaville and go 2 blocks - it's on the right next to La Cuisine (healthy food, smoothies, power foods, organic and vegan options)

Hours are:
Mon - Fri 6:00am - 11:00pm
Saturday 6:00am - 6:00pm
Sunday closed

Exercise and diving - correct, it's not recommended to do heavy exercise after diving - think about the shaken coke bottle effect in your body - it is a recipe for DCS. After a couple of DCS that involved diving after intense workouts, I now allow a minimum of 12 hours between a dive and a workout - this has been encouraged by my diving Dr. here as well. Also recommended to drink an extra liter of water for every 20 minutes of rigorous exerise. Dehydration is the #1 cause of DCS around here.

Have a fun, safe and healthy vacation!
