I just returned from 5 days of diving the Gunilda, out of Rossport Ontario. The Gunilda may very well be the most spectacular wreck in the Great Lakes. A 200' private yacht that went down in 1911 after running aground on McGrarvey shoal in Lake Superior. She sits perfectly intact in 260' of water and she is beautiful, and very ornate. No zebra mussles either. There is so much to see, from the piano in the game room to the fan and clock sitting on the mantle of the fireplace in the sitting room. There are binnacles, bells and life boats to look at, and so much more. Hopefully I'll have a chance to go back next year.

ooohh.... I fell in love with the Gunilda when I saw a presentation at the Ford Sea Horses annual film fest years ago. A beautiful wreck all because the owner was too cheap to pay for a guide. Not something I'll ever dive given the depth but love the photos I've seen.

Is it still difficult to obtain a permit to dive her?

The boat I was diving from has a permit that is good for an extended period of time (several years) but my understanding is that no permit is needed now.

What were the water temp's like at 260?

Is it unusual for there to be no zebra mussels?

I obviously haven't dove the Gunilda but I can say that the zebra mussels didn't hit all the Great Lakes at the same time or rate. It's taken longer to make their way into the colder lakes. And it's taken awhile to make it to the deeper wrecks. & Superior is cold!

And Superior doesn't have enough calcium or something. I've never seen any on shallow wrecks either.
