Hello,
We'll be in the region pre-holidays and would love to dive while there. I'd appreciate any recommendations and expectations for December.

Thank you!
Pamela

I've dove with Down Under in the summer. The boat is a big Newton which you'll want if winter marine conditions get rough.

The shop has average water temperature by month posted on it's website. Have warm clothes for the surface interval if air temps are cool

It's harder to get out on a charter that time of year. There are some nice days, but the wind just blows more than in the summer. In the Gulf, you can expect water temps in the upper 60s, maybe maybe pushing 70. There is Vortex springs about an hour and a half away. Water is nice and clear and 67 year-round. It's a nice place to just dive, but without a cave certification, there's not much to see. I got pretty bored on my first dive there.

Yes it's harder to get a charter in winter. We snowbird on the FL panhandle (Jan.-March) and I usually (finally...) get one when the waves cooperate. I've been out with Niuhi 3 times out of Pensacola (really Perdido Key) and recommend them. No head on board.
Perdido Pass (basically on the FL line, just E. of Orange Beach) is an OK shore dive. Park at the far end of the restaurant (they didn't say anything--be discreet) as I think they closed off the place by the bridge where you begin the long walk. Tide dependent current wise, of course. You will pay to park in Gulf Shores.
