OK. I was diving with a Galileo Sol and Suunto Vyper as backup and one time our SI was a little short of the 1 hour the Vyper likes. It was 50 minutes or a little less. The Suunto gave me huge penalty on the next dive and in the end went into deco and with the Galileo having lots of NDL time I surfaced locking out the Vyper for 48 hours.

Who knows the exact details of the concession fee agreement between the hotel and the operators.

I wouldn't expect any tourist to know but a person that has owned and operated a dive shop there for 20 years might have a pretty good idea, may have even been involved in such business negotiations.

I am not questioning Christi's knowledge or experience. Exact details of contracts can differ. For example some contracts might entail servicing all watersports for all of a resorts properties. Others might be scuba for 1 property.

I sympathize with Christi's frustration. The $2 fee should be easy to pay and should be paid for by the divers directly or charged to the divers by the dive operator.

It's not always easy to see and understand an opposing point of view.
I am actually very open minded and capable of engaging in critical thinking - more so than most people I know in fact. I may be "just" be a dive shop owner in Cozumel, but I would say it's a safe bet that I have a more intimate understanding of how businesses operate here whether it's a dive shop or not.

From my perspective I think it is extremely "small and petty" of hotels to charge their guests to use a hotel facility like a dock. Why not the swimming Pool? Like Iberostar, I think most reasonable people should avoid these places and I will urge my hundreds of customers to look elsewhere for a hotel. Those idiot bean counters may think they can squeeze a few bucks out of each guest but I wonder how much empty rooms may cost them.

I suggest that all dive ops should pass this on.

Right on Dave - in fact several shops have now completely discontinued service to these properties. I have too many guests with existing reservations to do that now, so I will serve those who have existing reservations with us - but I suspect I will discontinue service in the future. In the meantime, I am encouraging all new bookings NOT to book at these properties.

I kind of understand and respect the concept of a $2 pier fee. The purpose of the pier is to enable resort watersports operators to serve guests. If guests choose to use an outside operator, that is cutting into the resort operators business.

As a guest I don't like paying extra and I don't necessarily agree with it, but as a business person, I understand the point of view of the resort operator. If they make the $2 payment process easy, they will get zero complaints from me.

So you’d be OK with any resort or hotel with an on-site restaurant tacking a $2 “access fee” on to your bill for every pizza you have delivered from the outside. Heck, why stop there, since the resort is “all inclusive” maybe they should tack on a $20 surcharge every time one choses to leave the compound for any reason... with perhaps an exception granted for a medical emergency so long as you can prove it via presenting management with a Doctor’s letter upon your return.

I don’t like to be nickel and dimed. If they need to charge $2 for “pier maintenance” they should’ve built it into their nightly or package rates. This reminds me of how airlines wanted to charge separately for using the washrooms. I don’t like airlines but I have no choice and must use them, but I usually stay away from hotels and resorts that charge “extra fees”. Especially the ones that charge USD$35 for wifi, pool, room robes and slippers, toiletries, etc. Really???

There is a concrete pier on the north end of the property. Who owns that pier? We have stoped there more than once to pick up a mask or fins that were misplaced and had to be brought down.
