LeeAnne, Walt, ICE, Kevfin, CompuDude and I showed up for last night's lecture with Michael Kane on GUE Fundamentals.
This was the first lecture of the actual class...and was absolutely FREE!! 3 folks were signed up at the beginning of the lecture to continue the class through this weekend, I understand 6 were signed up by the end of the lecture.
If you've been following DIR methods and gear config closely, you might not have discovered much new information, but having someone pull in all the peices was certainly nice. If you've been following DIR FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt), it was a great opportunity to listen to Mike lay it out in a non-confrontive, logical, and down-to-earth manner.
I once had some reservations about signing up for class, but no more. This is not a market-based, bottom-line business trying to maximize profits; it's a non-profit organization whose goal is to make confident, competent, and safer divers. IMHO, doing it for the right reasons.
I walked away with the sense that GUE is trying to move away from the troubled DIR moniker, and towards more generalized (and descriptive?) course titles. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.
Mike, I truly, truly appreciate the opportunity to meet you and sit in on your lecture. I look dreadfully forward to your critique of my skills in as near a future as possible.
