Lawman once bubbled...
My point is that it resembles a cult in it's structure. Right down to intense hostility to anyone who even remotely questions GUE or
wants to find out why so many people get worked up about it.

It just seems that everything about GUE/DIR makes people angry.

If you truly have an interest in finding out what gets people worked up about it, then the appropriate way to go about it is to ask the question " why does anyone get worked up about it".. However rather then taking the direct route, you chose to start a thread, while admitting that it may seem like a troll and then to start the discussion in terms of cult like similiarities and then you are surprised that some get emotional. I see from your bio that you are legally trained, so it would seem curious to many that as a lawyer you'd be surprised that inflamatory remarks spark passionate responses. It seems more to me that you were looking to start a controversy respecting DIR, and then at some opportunistic point attempt to suggest that it's the DIR advocates that are creating to the hostility. As a lawyer one would assume that you are adepth at research, so it's seems quit inconceivable to me that you failed to do any research on a subject matter that appears so important to you, but you chose to post a thread designed to spark controversy and then act surprised when you receive your desired result..

So let me be clear to you.. If you have a question relating to DIR/GUE I'll answer it for you.. If you have a question about how an undefined concentration of people will react to your off color comments I suspect no organization can respond to that but that each individual who has an opinion on the subject would need to respond on their own accord.. In other words, you question is illogically posed so perhaps you'd like to reconsider your thoughts..

roakey once bubbled...

Insult DIR and then act hurt when you get insulted back. I just can't seem to get that one through my thick head.

I don't think alot of the people have an issue with DIR, they have an issue with GUE divers/supporters. Diving DIR has nothing to do with GUE, they just stole the letters.

Hey y'all -

Lawman didn't say that it is a cult, he suggested that there were ways in which it had similar traits to the classic cult concepts...

Of course, he made the classic mistake of joking about something that some folk take too seriously.....

Primarily, he is right. There are a lot of similarities. Mind you, I can find the same similarities in Golfers, Online Gamers, Trekkies, and Card Carrying Members of Political Parties (Ohhh Boy! I'll get flamed over that one! :D )

That does not make him (or me!) Anti - DIR. I sure aint Anti - JJ . Although I will occasionally get peeved at GI3.

On top of all that, Lawman is Armour -- Gotta like that! Treadheads rule!

stricter requirements. To adhere to DIO (Doing It Outlaw) standards, the following are rigidly observed:

All rides must be Harley-Davidson (no AMF-produced models accepted).

Exposure suits must be constructed of leather or denim (Levis only, no bondage Wranglers).

Members will ensure that trimix (booze, weed, amphetamines) is employed for all technical riding.

Members will use the Long Bong for all gas sharing situations.

You definitely don't want to be a 'stroke' in this group...

Living out here in the plains of Alberta, I never really knew of DIR/GUE until I started snooping Scubaboard (and lately it started showing up in Rodale's Mag too).

Alot of it makes good logical sense, and I intend to learn more about it because it might make my diving safer/better.

But Unfortunately there are people out there that will try to create Issues, just because they can, and they like to see the wreckage afterward. (And the Web is bad for that because you can be Anonymous and just do your $hit disturbing from the safety of your keyboard)

DIR and PADI seem to be the broadest hit recipients of these type of discussions, and its usually the most uninformed and immature people making the waves.

Now shut up, put on your black hightop sneakers, and drink your Koolaid like a good boy..

Whoever resurrected this thread needs a triple helping of the Koolaid, btw...

Well I see our time is up for today. I think the Group made
excellent progress getting these Issues out. We still need to work on our anger managment though. In our next session we'll explore why GUE people need to have a longer hose than everyone else. What does that signify? Could it be compensation for some other ...shortage? Dr. Freud will join our next session to help answer the question "Does size matter?":doctor:

Lawman:

One thing you're going to find sooner than later I expect is that this is a very small board. Don't be fooled by the number of registered users. The average number of users online is much more indicative...which means that there are about 150-200 regulars. The only currency that any of us have and the only thing that means anything is credibility.

There are regulators on this board that are taken seriously and there are regulators that are not. Regulator status is hardly the end all be all on this board.

There are people with 5 posts who are taken seriously and people with 500 posts who aren't. Post count means virtually nothing on this board.

The only thing that does matter on this board is credibility. You can poke fun, call names, make innuendoes about the "size of our hoses", but in the end, you'll be the only person worse off for it.

I do not dive DIR, and I am not with you or against you in this cult discussion. I am merely trying to point out that, should you continue in this direction, you will, in my estimation continue to lose some of the credibility that is the only currency on this board. If that is of no consequence to you, so be it.

Again, good luck on the board.

Dive safely,
Matt
