Sawadee P-Meguni and BIG Greetings to everyone in Phuket !
I had a few trips there and loved every minute, except the one when I had to leave !! All of us want to have an update on how things are getting on in Phuket....soooo. please feel free to share. I'd love to have contact with some of the locals I met on the beach in Phuket to know that they are ok after 12-26 but I'll just have to wait till I have time to get back to c. Please let me know how it's going with reconstruction in Phi Phi too. Many thanks and best wishes. Falang Deano,.... I mean deano2 !
Hi Deano2
Here is some updated info and answeres for many of your questions regarding the Phi Phi Dive Camp.
Volunteer FAQ:
What exactly does the work involve?
- Diving, snorkeling, lifting, co-ordinating, managing, organizing. The longer you stay the, more involved you get. Depending on how long you stay and help you will be assigned to do different jobs. Divers must be experienced - Dive master or Instructor or with at least 100 dives. Snorkellers need to be fairly fit and hardworking. We are always looking for more volunteers.
What about accommodation?
- Basic bungalows with fans, running water and electricity. Accommodation is free of charge for volunteers. There is a lot of other accommodation available, with aircon & swimmingpool, -if you want to contribute to the local economy.
Are meals provided for?
- Some, lunch on the boat. Breakfast and dinner you have to provide yourself. There are restaurants and bars open on the island.
How do we get to Phi Phi Island? What airport should we land in Thailand?
- Phuket airport and take ferry from Phuket Town, daily, morning 8.30am and afternoon 1 pm, from Ratsada Pier.
What are the health risk for us over there, medical supplies and water purification stuff?
- Talk to your doctor or a travel clinic regarding the vaccinations you will need Since you are working on debris clean-up, I would suggest that your tetanus shots be up-to-date. There is a nurse from Germany on the island. Her phone number is displayed all over the island so anyone who needs her can easily get in touch. She also gives the required tetanus shots (painly!) and treats cuts and bruises. With all metal and sharp items around the area, this medical assistance is indispensable.
What we need to bring etc?
- Dive & snorkeling equipment. Prepare to be in the sun & sea.
Equipment provided?
- There is some dive and snorkeling gear available but not enough if there are many people. If volunteers do not have their own gear or cannot borrow from other divers on the island, dive gear can be rented on the island from the dive operators that now are open. The project has been sponsored with a compressor and tanks.
Do you need people for the long term?
- Yes. For now it looks like the project will run through May 31, 2005, but this depends on a variety of factors and may change. Check back with me later for future updates.
Thank you very much for helping out.
