Hello,

This here message indicates that I should post something here and stop lurking. I have been doing occasional dives when I get to somewhere there is something worth seeing every now and then. Now that I have coaxed my Fiancee into trying to learn diving (she is taking a PADI OW course right now), I have started doing some more diving reading and trying to gather any useful information for the future (whether for our honeymoon or gear).

We hope to be able to go to Hawaii or French Polynesia for our honeymoon and assuming she gets certified (it's been a rough ride thus far, as she didn't swim much when she was younger nor had she been in large bodies of water much so she is trying to get over those phobias at the same time) am looking at various opinions on gear, etc.

Thus far I have found the board to be of an immeasureable value and would like to thank everyone for their involvement.

Cheers,

David

Welcome to ScubaBoard!

Sounds like your fiancee is working through those phobias. Often people can turn their "weaknesses" into their greatest "strengths". Just remind her that there is no hurry and that she should take her time getting comfortable with this new environment. The last thing you want is for her to feel rushed to get certified by the time you go on your honeymoon. That could turn her away from diving forever.

Dive safe!

No worries there, have been getting into the pool with her about every other day lately spending 30m to an hour just swimming around and tossing the toypedo around. The SCUBA cert is less important for the honeymoon as far as I am concerned then it is to get us doing something else together that I and hopefully we will really enjoy together. If she needs me to keep going to the pool with her, we'll keep doing it. The dive shop has been extremely helpful and supportive of this so we plan on taking advantage of it (of course the money back guarantee they offer if she backs out for any reason is likely providing them some additional incentive).

But, we have both found all the diving to be a mostly relaxing escape from our normal daily lives, which is great. There have been a couple of bad days from school or work, etc. that have been salvaged from an our of getting wet and blowing bubbles. Hopefully we can get her to do some skills work in the deep end on Thursday.

Cheers,

David

David,

That sounds great! I'm sure that you'll both have some great times diving together in the future.

Congratulations to you and best wishes to the bride-to-be!

Sounds like you guys have gotten off to a pretty good start. As far as your fiance goes, try not to push her too hard - she needs to develop confidence in her own abilities. You might also want to resist the urge to help her carry gear, set up equipment, etc. Again, she needs to feel self-sufficient in order to be confident in the water. Too many times, guys (Hey, I speak from my own experience - guilty as charged!) push their Sig Oths into diving, with unfortunate consequences - she has problems, refuses to continue diving, and you're stuck without a buddy.

Be sure to check out the New2Scuba and Basic Scuba Discussions forums. There's a wealth of info there for the new diver.

Welcome to the board,
Grier

David, welcome to the board. Ditto on the take your time. My wife was scared of the water and could barely swim when she got certified. She still doesn't like to swim, but when we go to warm, tropical waters, she joins me on the dives.

Congradts on getting married. JFWIW, Debbie and I are celebrating our 25th today (8/11).............

Welcome to the Board. My suggestion, get your fiance' on here too.. I didn't want to dive either, in fact it took my husband 6 months to convince me to even try. BTW, I'm 2 test away from becoming a DM now... never give up.

Howdy!

Welcome to SB!!
:happywave Put us in your computer's favorites and check in often. This is a great place to learn, compare, argue :argue: Look around our various forums - everything from New-To-Scuba to Instructors-Only to Dive Medicine.

I hope you will encourage her to join SB, too - and talk about her problems on NewToScuba forum, where we can help.

Welcome to the board, fun people, cool topics, great info.
I hope your fiancee will get over her phobias and scuba dive, it's the best in the world.
P.S. Don't forget to fill out your profile.

Welcome to the board! I recently got my betterhalf into diving as well. After our recent trip to Coz she loves it. Keep an eye on her and if she or you ever feel uncomfortable don't do the dive. Better to wait one out than have someone stressed in the water. You guys are in for a lot of fun just dive SAFE!
