What was I thinking when I decided to give my husband Tony scuba diving lessons for christmas?

My name is Trudy and I know nothing about scuba diving except it makes my husband very happy. We tried snorkeling in St. Maartens last year and were amazed at the life below the surface. Our 10 year old son wants to learn in a few years so I'm sure I'll join him. Right now Tony dives in New Brunswick, Canada near our home and is anxious to get to the carribean and see new things.

182 days to go.....

Greetings, Trudy and welcome to Scubaboard.

I chuckled as I read your post because I understand very well why your husband Tony is very happy and why your son wants to learn. I'm addicted to diving, it is my liquid therapy from the insanity of my life on land. I hope you'll be equally hooked given how amazed you were when you snorkeled.

I would definitely encourage you to learn because sharing dives with your loved ones makes the dives that much more special. If you don't want to dive in cold water you could always dive while on a tropical vacation.

Good luck!!

Samantha

There's no way my wife would let me have that much fun without her.....

I should have mentioned that I also need some advice on some great dive companies in the carribean. I posted a question in another section but have not had any replies. I did find a company in Cozumel that seems to be exactly what I need (the owner of the company is Roberta and she runs 3 different companies). I DO NOT want to book through Carnival!! We will be in Grand Cayman, Belize, Isla Roatan and Cozumel.

You need to make sure that whomever you make arrangements with - will allow a 10 year old to dive with them.

Not all agencies will certify at that age and some dive sites are not suited to the limitations that age dictates.

That being said, just be open and honest and folks will help you out!

My above post said my son wants to learn IN A FEW YEARS. Not now. We're planning to let Tony dive alone while we snorkel. Thanks though.

Welcome Trudy,

It's funny You should post as a dive widow. Just the other night my wife was saying that she decided to certify with me because she could see the same thing coming.

Take the plunge, it's a great couples activity.

Pete

Oops! Oh well, best of luck CJ's is a member here and works for a dive op on GC.
Send a PM with questions!

Welcome, I am new to scubaboard but hubby has been a member for ages. We are the flip side of your story. I talked him into certification after snorkeling for years in deep water. It is a great couples thing and an extra added benefit fit, is the no talking under water. LOL no fighting or arguing, just enjoying the deep blue sea and when you share that spectacular moment of seeing a turtle, shark or other interesting critter you will talk about it for days.
I will tell you that it took us a time to get a rhythym. He handles equip and cleaning. very OCD which is a good thing, about it. I bring the crevezas, cocktails ect and the humour. Once you find how to best suitup together and break down equipment, it is all cake.
GO FOR IT!
