Good point. I cant tell what that pic is of. But I know a retired capt who use to run a supply ship in the Gulf who has a very clear pic of a Great white 50 miles off Pensacola he took in I think 1988.. I doubt you will hear of another one for at least a few more years.

has anybody read the article in the Florida sportsman about Great Whites in the gulf in the colder months? They have caught numerous sharks off Tampa in the winter.
 
If this was indeed a great white shark, what would make this even more unusual is that it occurred in the summer when the water was extremely warm, much warmer than the great white's typical comfort zone of 50s-60s. According to a book I have about sharks and rays of the Gulf of Mexico, great whites are very uncommon in the northern Gulf of Mexico, but if you do encounter one, it will most likely be in the months of Jan-Apr when the water temps are cooler.
