Actually on the border of So Cal and Low Cal.

Nice. Memo to self - dive local.

The Story

Maybe I won't have to pay four-digits for a GW trip afterall...

Unreal. I'm not a marine biologist, but seems to me that if, oh, say a Grizzly Bear was hanging out (make that several) in Lincoln Park in So Cal (albeit, far from where they're usually spotted, blah, blah, blah) and there were ariel photographs and multiple sightings, etc. that SOMEBODY might want to let people know.

I mean, if I was diving there, or Kayak fishing there (as we do) and I got munched, and they KNEW about this and didn't post anything for over a month.... man. I'd go looking for someone - assuming I still could.

I just don't get the logic.

Eh, theyre there all the time. Whether we see them on not is a different story. They're common down here. I saw a show on Tech TV about how they are learing how much they DON'T know about GWs. They come way down to baja and even go out to Hawaii pretty routinely.

Edit: just found a better version of the story from Stanford - has a map of a few of the coordinates where tags came off.

Not that this makes it any better, but I would be willing to bet that Great Whites frequent our dive areas much more than we realize. I'm sure one has noticed a few of us, and we didn't even know it. Am I afraid of Great Whites, you bet your arse. Will it change my dive habits, not yet. We kind of expect to hear of sightings/ attacks up by San Francisco (especially Tomales Bay), but when I look at how far south the recent attack was, and how close it is to areas I like to dive, ewww...
We were diving the western channel islands (great spot for G.W's to frequent, due to the sea lion rookery), and we noticed something bitten in half laying on the bottom. I didn't think it bothered me much, until each time my dive buddy bumped into me, or a large seal came flying in from nowhere at my face...
I guess it just reminds us of some of the risks.

Whitey seems pretty smart. He hangs out where the sealions, (his food source) are. I like to think I'm equally smart. I hang out where lobster, scallops, and halibut, (my food sources), are. Where they converge...well, I minimize my chances of mis-identification. My gear has a lot of blue on it, and I'm painting my tank red. Those of you who advocate an all black gear configuration, take note; ever see a red and blue pinniped? I'll bet a Great White hasn't, either! (I thought about trailing a streamer that says, "Not a Sea Lion!" behind me, but that seemed like over kill.)

It's their turf. I just visit a lot.

Maybe it's just my opinion, but not diving in a sea lion rookery/haul out seems like a good idea. I don't want my last photo's published posthumusly!

(Yes, my tank will have a big #8, I'm a NASCAR fan!)

Assuming that GW can see in color, how far will RED actually travel in water....10-15'....lets see what does freshly injured flesh look like....RED?

I suggest a Orange. That way you will look like you are a giant Garibaldi and they wouldn't attach the State Fish AND a protect species....oh wait, GWs are protected to in CA....maybe they are buddies?

So go ORANGE!!!!!!!!;)

So Cal NASCAR fans - I just don't get it.

I'll keep my eyes open, and stay a little more aware rather than resort to left-hand-turn graphics.

Thanks for the persepective.

Hey, it's the fastest growing sport, the only thing that beats it in ratings is football, and when races are in town, the tracks sell out to the tune of 150,000 to 250,000 fans.

And we get two races next year.

I have other tanks, too!
