I know this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I have to bring it up again: "The Certified Diver's Handbook" by Clay Coleman is great! It's very entertaining and extremely educational; I kept laughing out loud while learning everything from detailed mechanical regulator stuff to the inner workings of coral! I liked the book so much I bought a second copy for my brother rather than loaning him my copy. True, I'm a newbie and can't vouch for any technical accuracy, but if you want a book that is just plain old fun to read, on our favorite subject, you can't go wrong with this one.

The only downside is that Clay Coleman can't be everyone's dive buddy; the guy's got some *serious* style, both writing and diving.

[I don't know Mr. Coleman---my great loss.]

I'm a newly certified diver and purchased this book a few weeks ago. I'm currently on page 205 and can't believe how much great information I have learned from this book. There is so much interesting and useful stuff in this book that just wasn't covered in my OW classes. Someone in another thread said it but I'll say it again....Every new diver should read this book! I highly recommend this book to any new diver that wants to become more educated about SCUBA diving.

Mr. Coleman, thank you VERY much for making this book available! :D

Does anyone else find it suspicious that this dude shows up and starts pumping his book about a week ago? And then - Wow - here's a thread extolling the virtues of his book, all by posters with a COMBINED post count of 19?

Pretty transparent, dude. You can do better if you're that hard up for people to buy your book.

With all due respect, I think you should reconsider your position. Consider this....the book was designed to help NEWLY certified divers. Wouldn't it make sense that folks with low post counts (re: new divers) would be the ones most likely to to be talking about (and benefit from) a book such as this?

As for the author, Louisianadiver registered here on 04-11-2004...not a week ago. As is the case with the original poster, I do not know the auther of this book. I do, however, find value in this resource and see no reason why others shouldn't hear of it.

Boogie711, obviously you are a far more experienced diver than I with your 1,600 posts and all but don't rain on my parade just cause I get excited about an opportunity (re: this book) to increase my understanding and appreciation for this sport and wish to share my opinion with others.

On a different note, I welcome any recommendations you might have on "acceptable" entry level SCUBA books. If you are gonna dog this book you might as well offer something positive to this thread...

I'm also a newbie and just finished reading the book... I originally saw it "advertised" here in a post by the author, and bought it from amazon. I loved it and found it to be very useful, supplementing the OW manual with useful information about how to actually go diving.... I'd heartily recommend it to anyone who fits the target audience, and would also love other recommendations anyone has...

I'm also one of those newbies that extolled the virtues of the book, new to diving and the board. I read ALOT, sometimes up to 5 or 6 books a week.

Rarely do you find an author that discusses his books with readers on a popular message board, so in support of him and his book I decided to write nice things about it.

Surely you don't judge a poster by his post counts, just like a book and its cover right?

Let's just say that all the spam/shilling around here has reached all time highs, and I'm a little hyper suspicious.

And there are a lot of people on this board who are "new divers" who have more than just a few posts. Tell you what - find someone to extol the virtues of the book who's been on registered on here since before May, and I'll publicly apologize.

While a public apology is neither requested nor expected (from me at least), I did find a couple of positive reviews of this book from members that have more of a history on this board than I do. Please reference this thread:Brand new book for certified divers

While I can appreciate your desire to protect this board from spammers I just don't think you have anything to worry about with this. Maybe you'll continue to think that these other newbies and I are up to no good and that's cool I guess but I really whish you would consider not jumping to conclusions so quickly.

Nice website by the way. The Wetnotes look cool...let me know if you re-up on these as I would be interested in purchasing a couple of them.

Happy diving,
Craig
