Lithium and water don't mix so well. I'm not sure I'd want scrubber material made out of lithium.

 
Sodium and water don't mix together very well either,
Chlorine will kill you.
But you need Sodium Chloride (table salt, ocean salt) in order to survive.
Got to look at the compound, not the elements that create the compound.

I would be a bit wary for underwater use, due to the high solubility in water and consequently the high risk of a caustic cocktail.
This is obviously different from the Lithium Silicate mentioned by the OP.

This is an interesting article (I did look it up due to the curiosity sparkled by the OP mentioning it) but it is geared toward environmental capture of CO2.
