I have never been to Grand Cayman before and I want to take my non-diving wife there for a vacation. I am a recreational diver coming of a 20 year lay-off.

1. Can you please recommend a great dive operator? Non cattle boat type?
2. Can you please recommend a great place to stay?
3. Is a car necessary?
4. Can you please recommend a great underwater photo shop operator in Grand Cayman?
5. How about the best dive spots?

Tanks to everyone's input.

Hi Jim, I dove Grand Cayman last December and used Off The Wall Divers. They came highly recommended and I was not disappointed. Absolutely no cattle boat feel and very accommodating, check out Princess Penny's Point....awesome wall dive! Here's a link to their site....

Great place? What's your budget? There's The Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman, which is supposed to be pretty nice.

Rent a car. Just do it.

Cathy Church runs an UW photo center from the Sunset House hotel.

Best dive spots, IMHO, are on East End and the North Wall. Tons to choose from.

A lot will depend on what it is you look for in a vacation. My favorite place to stay in GC is Cobalt Coast and my favorite dive op is DiveTech. Its away from the hustle and bustle of 7 Mile Beach. Now, if your wife is happy lounging by the pool, reading a book while you're out diving, CC is fine. If she wants a big-time resort experience with more actitivies, beach, etc., I suggest the Westin. You'll definitely want a car if you do CC (they have a couple of meal plans, but we like dining out around the island so we always get a car).

Cathy Church is the underwater photo expert to see.

And east end and north wall diving are your best dive bets. In order to dive the east end you pretty much need to stay over there. Cobalt Coast/DiveTech does a lot of North Wall diving, if conditions allow.

We will be staying at the Spanish Bay arriving on April 7th. We were there two years ago and we can't wait to get back. The last time we dove with Bob Soto's but I have heard they went out of business after the hurricanes. There is a lot of good shore diving that can be done for cheap so it helps to have a car.

I just spent a long weekend at the new Ritz Carlton on 7 mile beach. Hotel is beautiful but huge. The staff is also working the kinks out and the service is spotty at best - especially for a hotel that is charging US$700+/night. I have stayed at the Hyatt (now under going a much needed updating) that is a much more manageable size (but not as upscale at the Ritz) and Treasure Island condos (pretty heavily damaged by the hurricanes). Neither the Hyatt or Treasure Island condos were open and fully operational a couple of weeks ago. The summer before last, we looked into staying at one of the condo's on the east and north side of the island. Opted to 7 mile beach because that is where the nightlife and many of the islands restaurants are located. Allowed us to walk or taxi to dinner and not worry about DUI.

My favorite dive operator (that I have used for the last 6 years) is Divers Down (I have no affiliation with the operation). Best crews on the island. They dive both west (7 mile beach) and north sites...north is only open during summer months. They limit their dive trips to 8 divers. On 2 tank dives, they escort the first (deep) dive and leave the crowd on their own for the second. They will also let computer divers dive their own profile, assuming you can buddy up with another computer diver. For experienced Cayman divers, they will ask where you want to dive and try to make everyone happy with the selection. If you choose DD, tell “Shaggy” Paul I said hello.

I noticed that the reefs were pretty heavily damaged by the hurricanes (versus my previous dives). Most of the shallower soft corals, sponges, etc are gone. Thankfully the fish, turtles and crustaceans are still there. The dive operators did a great job in cleaning up the reefs but you can still find the occasional lounge chair or debris lodged into the reef structure.

A car is not "necessary" but you will definately want one to see the sites (hell, turtle jail, rum point, the blow holes, nature preserve, etc). For a bit of "cheese" go to the Pirate Museum (but be in the right state of mind before you get there - a number of beers will help that).

My favorite west deep dive sites are: Trinity Caves, Little Tunnels, Big Tunnel. My favorite west shallow sites are: Govenors Reef, Chain Reef and Spanish Anchor. If Tarpon is your thing, try a shore dive at Eden Rock. The Oro Verde isn’t all that great but there are a number of fringing reef wrecks that are a quick swim from shore.

Hope this helps.

I usually don't spend that either (this trip was a business trip). For $725/night + tax and etc (a negotiated rate) I had a typical Ritz Carlton room.......single queen bed, armoire w/TV, desk, small couch (not a pull out), balcony looking toward the ocean *but mostly at the empty Ritz Club condo building) and a bathroom with seperate shower and bath. The furnature was nice but the AC system wasn't pulling enough humidity out of the room to make it comfortable and theere wasn't enough hot water reaching up to my room (7th floor) so showers were a little on the cool side. By the way, that same room goes for over $1,000/night during peak holiday season.

As for the service comments, it took about 1.5 hour and 3 phone calls to have my carry on bag sent to the room after check in, 2 hours to get a burger at the pool bar, maid service that showed up at 6PM every night and the hot tub was broken for 2 of my 4 days. I'm sure they will eventually get everything worked out but when I'm on vacation, the last place I want to stay is a mega resort with a million people (can get that at home in NYC).
