My experience is that a compass ican be useful, even on a wreck. While they are indeed influenced by all that metal, they can still be useful if, for example, on a no-current day you get confused about which way is forward or aft. Yeah, the compass may be 30 degrees off, but it still tells which way to the pointy end of the wreck.
A compass is also useful for finding your way back to the wreck if you do a bit of exploring in the sand surround the wreck.
My advice is to take a compass with you, even on a wreck dive.
