I've always fancied that if you protect yourself too much your body never learns to deal with these things. I'm not saying intentionally stick your head in the toilet or anything; I just wonder if you walk around in a bubble, you end up worse off than if you didn't bother.

Anyone with an actual education (as opposed to me) care to comment on that line of reasoning?

Yes, there is truth to that. Kids that spend time in Pre-school centers have better resistances when they go to Real-school than those who don't. Famers often are immune to tetnus. Other examples...

However, Flu kills enough people that we generally feel it's best to fight it. If we take your suggestion to extreme - with a different disease, populations had more general resistance to cholora before we started fighting it. People who didn't die of it were resistant, and whatever helped them in the first place was passed on the their kids, so they had a better chance, too. Nonetheless, we prevent cholora when we can. Ultimately, much of it becomes judgement calls, does it not.
