Good to hear you made it OK. For the experienced divers it's easy to say stay calm, do this and do that. But for new divers is more difficult to stay calm in a situation like this.
I remember when I started diving with my friend, we did a dive off Vancouver Island, BC. Going out of the water my friend got tangled in kelp and instead of staying still waiting for me to help he started spinning around getting tangled even more. Luckily I had a small knife attached to my BCD, I cut the kept and helped him out, and everything was OK at the end. But in panic you don't think what is correct and what not, you just want to get out. That's what you learn as you dive more and more to solve trouble without panic.
