A bunch of us are heading to St. Croix in May for a week. Got a question. I will be taking all of my gear, less tanks and weights. What do ya'll check at the airport and what do you carry on the plane?

I carry on my prescription mask and dive computer. Regs are usually in my hard cover suitcase; the rest in the soft sided dive bag which all gets checked.

Hubby is the same except camera is in his carry-on and the u/w case & strobe are in the hard sided suitcase.

I carry on my regs, computer, and all camera equipment. As a side note on St. Croix make sure you get a couple of night and day dives on the pier if there isn't cruise ships there. A great dive with lots seahorses, frogfish, turtles, eels, and a bunch of cool stuff. Its a great easy dive.

I carry on much as I can get away with to make sure I'll have that much in case checked bags run into problems. I remember a US jet in Roatan last year with luggage doors that wouldn't open and they almost flew it back that way for repair which would have meant no one on the plane would get any checked bags for at least a day. Fortunately they just barely did before giving up, but checked bags sometimes arrive days later. Any clothes I want to change into for 24 hours are in my roll-on along with as much gear as I can: regs, computers, masks, strobe, and anything else that will go. I usually have a couple of 1# soft weights in my roll-on as I like those when the Op has a limited selection of weight choices, and all batteries, to reduce weight in my checked bag.

Roll-ons are often gate checked tho, if you have to fly a leg on a regional jet or other reasons, so I carry all cameras in my backpack with medicines, papers, passport, money, the most important stuff - and the backpack never leaves my body, unless I leave it with a trusted friend while I go to the lavatory. Ok, maybe it goes in overhead if there's no enough room at my feet, but I prefer at feet for that one.

If you don't have a digital, hand held luggage scale, they're cheap on ebay and will prevent airport problems at check-in.

I suppose you have DAN dive insurance and not the bottom plan as it's a dog and only $10 less than the middle plan that is much better. I like comprehensive trip insurance when I leave the US, but that's a personal call. Make sure you personal medical coverage is good in the USVIs, or consider trip insurance. I use TravelSafe.com as it covers a lot of losses reasonably.

St.John is almost all national park and wonderful to explore by rental car. Hope you can mange a day but it's difficult to get to from St.Croix.

Have a great trip! :pilot:

Careful on the weight - DandyDon is correct. When we flew to St. Croix, we took a Cessna 402 twin from Puerto Rico using Cape Air (great hop, too). It's not a big plane so weight is an important consideration. They won't carry any bag over 70 pounds period. We took a triathlon bike and all the gear and didn't have any problems, but we let them know beforehand.

Anyway, I take my reg, camera and computer with me as a carry-on. Last time through, the TSA agent was a diver and got so excited when he saw the regulator. It was a good trip!

I carry my bcd, regs, computer, fins, and mask in a mesh bag that goes overhead. That way I know my equipment makes it with me. Everything else is in the suitcase.

I carry my reg and computer with me. Security is pretty used to it, so it doesn't hold you up too much. Batteries for dive lights have proved to slow us down more than any of the other equipment (and it is usually in our checked luggage).

Watch the weight of your carry-on too. Some of the small island hoppers limit the weight and charge $$ extra for a heavy carry-on.

Have a great trip!!

Oh, always remove batteries from lights and such. Looks funny on x-ray, and some of the hot ones can start fires if turned on inside luggage.

I carry on Regs, Dive computer and Camera. Check everything else.

The Peir in St. Croix is Awesome Do a few dives on it if possible Day & Night! you can spend a long time under the peir. Just go slow you will be amazed how much stuff there is!!
