I am diving the Philippines next year and want to purchase a camera to help capture the experience. I have a very limited budget, I don't want to spend more than $700, maybe $800 for a camera. I am looking at the GoPro vs DJI Osmo action 5. Any opinion on these or maybe ideas for another inexpensive diving camera? I still have to purchase the housing and lighting too so any suggestions on that would be helpful too...right now I'm a deer in headlights. I know the quality is not going to be great but it's better than returning home empty handed. Naturally, looking for the best quality my money will buy. Thank you.

As a long time GoPro user, I would say the Osmo Action 5 would definitely be worth considering. I don't own one, but it seems to do better underwater without lights which I assume you won't have. GoPro is probably about to release the Hero 14, so hang on for a little while. Even if you don't want the latest model, prices are likely to drop on the older versions.

Thank you. I've got time, I'll wait. I do think you can buy underwater lighting for these types of cameras, I would question their effectiveness but they are out there.

I was referring to generic underwater video lights. Ideally you would have two and expect to pay the same price as the cost of the camera for one.

Ouch, yeah I won't have lights in that case :( Just watched a video of the Action 5, I might be sold, does great in low lighting.
