Good writing on marine biology? (Beyond the fish ID books...)

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone knows of good writing to enhance ones knowledge of marine creatures and ecosystems (especially tropical / reef)?

I've got a couple of good fish guides, but I'm hankering for something a bit more informative written by an underwater naturalist. For example, I'm a big fan of Stephen Jay Gould and would really like to find someone who writes similarly well about the undersea world.

So far, I've got a copy of Darwin's Coral Reefs which I'm just about to start. But what else would you recommend?

I just picked up some books on Reef Ecology for some research I am doing. I got "Watching Fishes: Understanding Coral Reef Fish Behavior" by R. Wilson and J Wilson, this may be out of print but you might be able to get a copy from a used book dealer. I also got "The Biology of Coral Reefs" by Sheppard, Davy and Pilling which goes into detail concerning ecologic structure of the system and might be a bit too "scientifically based" for your needs. Another one I have is "Marine Conservation Biology" edited by Norse and Crowder which is a collection of different articles on the subject.

I'm not sure if this is the "Fish ID" class you say you're not interested in, because it's by DeLoach & Humann, the best-known Fish ID guys, and the same publisher. But just to be sure you're not overlooking Amazon.com: Reef Fish Behavior - Florida Caribbean Bahamas: Sports & Outdoors

Definitely not an ID book, I found it a great eye-opener as to what these creatures are doing down there. It's not an integrated view of reef ecology, but sort of nibbles at the subject bottom-up, as it were.

If our look for reefs and marine like book. Search for a specific place for instance Red Sea marine life and corals. I've done research on the Red Sea. Some photos are available on flckr under scubadiveilat or on facebook. I 'll be posting and uploading starting this week.
