I assume this is the apropriate forum to post this since you guys are the only ones who really advocate using it. I'm new to diving (just finished AOW-15 dives) and I would really like to know more about how people 'decided' on things like the Padi RDP, how computers work and more interestingly how decompression theory works. Now I know most of you are going to recommend that I take a class of some sort; but that really isn't an option at this point--as I am a medical student living in Dominica right now. But it is something I would do when I got back to the states. Can you guys recomend (a) book(s) or other resources.

I am also curious as to whether or not Oceanic Versa/VT Pro can function as reliable bottom timer in gauage mode.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the links--I didn't see the Physiology forum; I will direct my questions there. Regardless, I am very interested in DIR philosophy.

I think two good books which cover basic dive physiology and are an interesting read are:

Deeper into Sport Diving by John Lippmann
Deep Diving by Bret Gilliam

There's a bunch or articles on Deco (fitness, pfos ect) on GUE's website GUE>Research>Physiology

Also on 5thD-X's website read Delia's Battle Field Calculations... lot's of tips on how to do "Scuba math"
Battle Field calculation - by Delia Milliron

This is a synopsis of all the battle field calculations used in our classes. Downloading this and working through the formulas will help the student understand doing calculations using "Scuba Math"

Thanks for the links Ben.

The battlefield calculations really help simplify the dynamics of a profile to the point where I can understand it.

Good stuff.

Another good source of info is http://dir-diver.com/en/knowledge/

Well written articles and explanations on a wide variety of stuff including
Calculations on the fly
Dive Planning on the fly
Average depth for deco
and
Using the Min Deco Table

Well written, concise but still hitting the important points. For example, the article on average depth deco discusses the effect of reverse profiles and how using the true average depth on such a profile would underestimate deco.
