Well, here is the good news. Smart guy Stan (that's me) decided that the only way to insure that my SCUBA gear would get to Florida and be insurable, was to ship it UPS. Therefore, I shipped it down to Hawks Cay Resort and printed return labels to ship it back to my home in Shreveport. The gear got there fine and we had a great vacation. The last day we shipped it back. :D

Now, here's the bad news. On Friday 26th (is that like a double 13?), the package arrived in, yep, New Orleans, from whence it never emerged. All new gear; all used one, that's one time. So now, I have to replace my gear (actually about 1800.00, insured for 1400.00) with the exception of my regulator, gauges and dive computer that I carried on the plane. : :06:

So, with the current chaos concerning lost luggage and items at airports, how can we protect ourselves from lost gear? If something had happened on the way down, I would have been out a lot more money. Flight tickets and hotel, were all prepaid:11:

P.S. - People at UPS were idiots. They said we couldn't process a claim until the gear showed scanned out of NO. That won't be happening. After three days of asking supervisors to call us back, we finally got hold of someone who understood that the packages in New Orleans sleeps with the fishes, and is helping us to process a claim.

On the other hand, I do get to buy new gear. ;)

And the questuion is... what?

SCUBA Gear stolen... from airports? Try and be serious.

The resale value of SCUBA gear is 2 cents on a Dollar. On a good day.

The idea of anyone stealing anything out of a secure environment at an airport? Not real likely. They know they're in a very "watched" environment.

Lost, screwed up, left unlocked, unzipped or otherwise TARFU'd? Sure. All the time. Stolen? Really is not happening.

If you arrive in FLA and need SCUBA gear, the airline will help you rent nice stuff. If you are going to a Caribbean resort, try to pick the ones with reputable associated dive shops to back up otherwise dubious airline baggage histories.

UPS will pay you off.

This is a joke, right?

Why'd you insure it for less than the full value?

Yeah, okay, more like a nickel on a buck.

And you insure $1800 worth of stuff for $1400 because that's what you'll pay for it when you buy it all at once.

Say, wait a minute. Packing $1800 worth of stuff (not including the carried on hoses, computer and regs)... wow, that's a lot of stuff to go to Florida.

Ignoring the fact that I regularly *make* money through diving purchases, airport theft is a real problem.

$1800 isn't an awful lot, especially for two people (Stan used 'we' in his post).

$900 is perfectly reasonable for wetsuits ($200 each), fins ($100 each), lights ($80 each), hoods ($30 each), masks ($50 each), snorkels ($25 each), booties ($30 each), gloves ($30 each)... oh wait, we're already over $1000....

A Henderson 2 piece Hyperstretch 5mm is about $500. I know, I just bought one. BC's are not cheap either. Ever price a new regulator?

$1800 is fairly inexpensive for equipment.

Thanks.

Well, to be fair, regs were taken on board the plane ;)
