I just wanted to pop my head in to say hello!
My name is Luc, I'm 24 years old and I've been diving since July 2008 (8 years too late I say). My father who is a Master Diver and a DM(IT) with 200+ logged dives has gotten me into it. He is awesome to dive with and I look up to him.
After my OW I decided to take my AOW right away. 60 ft. depths where I dive (St-Lawrence River and the Great Lakes) doesn't allow me to see much. I have also completed my peak performance boyancy specialty with PADI.
This season I will finish with 24+ dives and I had the privilege of diving alot of nice wrecks like the Robert Gaskin, Henry Daryaw, Lillie Parsons, Conestoga, Wolf Islander II and the Kingshorn (Eastcliffe Hall next week). I've also done a 2 drifts (Sparrow Island and Ash Island) and I'm doing the Needle's Eye Rush this weekend (SO excited!). I also had the chance to dive this past weekend a site called Lock 21 which was part of the flooded (lost) cities of the St-Lauwrence (Any locals on the board would know it).
Wanting to dive as much as possible I decided to buy my own gear right away since renting from LDS' is rather expencive and fighting to put on a regular wetsuit doesn't interest me what so ever.
My 2nd stages are both Unidive B-300's (which I wasn't able to find much documentation or reviews from them online but they work great, my BC is a Tigulio T-52 Hover (I love this thing. I found with other BC's it would push my face in the water.) I have a 7mm Henderson Thermoprene wetsuit with a matching Shorty. Cressi Frog fins, etc... etc... etc... (I've spent a small fortune already!!! CRAP!!!)
I've never been so excited about a sport in such a long time. I used to play football at high levels right below pro until an injury put an end to that career rather quickly. I feel so relaxed and comfortable under water and it gives me the chance to spend time with my father.
This site has been a fountain of knowledge for many subjects for me and I wanted to finally sign up, introduce myself and thank everyone for your infinite wisdom.
I had a couple questions that I wanted to ask that I hope you all can help me with.
1. L-Arginine. I take it when I work out. It produces Nitric oxide which is one part nitrogen and one part oxygen. I've spent hours reading about it online and its always linking back to the same websites that REALLY tell you nothing. I'm NOT looking to use it to prevent any type of decompression illness or not doing safety stops etc... I use it for working out and My question is will it harm me if I take it before diving (like if I worked out the night before)? I figure that the less nitrogen in my blood the better but I'm not exactly sure.
2. My regulators make sounds when I breathe off them on the surface (when they are dry). I know this is very common but its extremely annoying. Is there a way to fix it? Or can I take it to my LDS and ask them to tune or or fix it?
3. I'm a heavy breather and I've been making some changes in my life such as quitting smoking, taking yoga (don't laugh) etc... in order to be able to breathe more efficiently under water. I rent AL-100's and I find I still come up to the surface with only 300 psi of air (while my father with steel 130's still has 1500 psui) and have had to call some deep dives because of it. I aquired an AL-40 Stage bottle that I take with me on deeper dives. I'm in the market for 2 tanks during the off season and I was looking at getting 2 HP steel 100's. MY logic behind it is that when I dive with my father, we can each take a steel 130 for the first dive (generally deeper) then on the 2nd dive take the steel 100's. Does anyone agree or disagree? I've read the write-ups on steel vs. aluminum (very well written, greatly informative) and I have made my decision based on that. Some people have told me to go with Faber tanks because they are the best... Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
If you have any tips, tricks, help, or if you wanna say Hello! please feel free to reply to this post.
Thanks so much!
Luc
