I am hoping to spend 1-2 month next winter somewhere doing remote work and diving.
My ideal destination would be:
Diving
- Can dive "house reef" as much as I want (solo or instabuddies)
- Sometimes join on trips with other people when convenient for the dive operator
- Just needs tanks + lead on the cheap, happy to be very flexible and help out if needed
- Personally somewhat into DIR/wrecks, but this is not a requirement
- Colorful reefs don't interest me (they are "ok")
- Most places with unguided diving (e.g. on Malta) mostly offer it to groups with the idea that the group has a car (and renting car+oxygen kit can make this expensive solo)
Living & social side
- Any cheap hostel/couch is enough, nice if cooking my meals is ok
- Somewhat reliable internet (doesn't have to be super fast)
- Lots of freedom as a solo woman (can hike around alone, or party without social issues)
- My languages: German, English, Spanish, ...
- Flights from northern Europe cheapish (and try to limit CO2)
- Diving op staff does not try to get into my pants
Recommendations for places?
Canaries
- Spanish (nice) and free socially
- Lots of diving in winter, but pricy, don't know any operator with such setup
- Diving focused on wildlife
Mainland Spain
- Spanish (nice) and free socially
- Off season means many places are closed, and drysuit needed
- Pricing similar to canaries
Malta
- Slightly cheaper than Spain/Canaries
- English, but harder to make friends than in Spain
- Wrecks
Cyprus
- How is it socially for a longer time?
- How are prices of living/food and diving as compared to Malta/Spain?
- How much diving is happening in the winter?
Somewhere SE-Europe
- Any other viable places?
Egypt
- Diving seems great and cheap
- Not sure I want to live for few months (want to go clubbing and hike alone)
Somewhere in SE-Asia?
- Is it cheaper after the flights?
Any other suggestions? Any concrete operators to look into?
