Don Janni:
If you could pick the color of the embroidery then "thing of beauty might apply. Orange... reminds me of the Longhorns and I'm a Razorback.

Don,

We use silver embroidery on the Purple wings, and black on the hot pink wings..........;)

We can also make up the wings without any embroidery (debadged) Fabric colors other than black , and the debadged wings are a special order, takes ~10 days, no change in price.

Tobin,

Do you charge extra for different fabric colors? And what other colors are there?

Gregg

No extra for the colors. We done Camo, Hot Pink, Purple, and black. We even made a few in a really nice red, pink, white Hawaiian Print, too bad we can't source that fabric anymore the ladies loved it.

The black and Purple are ballistic nylons, all others are 1000 denier. 1000 Denier nylons have been routinely used for wings and work fine, but are bit less robust than the 1050 ballistics.

Tobin: I was really having fun with the "Thing of Beauty" comment. My wife graduated from Texas and me from Arkansas. We're bitter rivals if they're playing each other.

First thing she said upon my pulling your wing out of the box was "The Longhorn's are written all over that, cool." Plus, you would not want someone to think you might be a Tennessee fan.

I figured different colors would be available. I think I would pick medium grey but not silver.

Thanks for everyones responses. I am definatly leaning towards the DSS Single Rig. Now the only thing I have to figure out is weighting. Does anyone have weight pockets that they use on the DSS? I have used integrated weights in the past and like them a lot.

Kevin

Forgot to ask: I want to get the Pro harness because it looks much easier to use for someone new to BP/W BCs, is this a good choice?

Av,

Regarding harnesses; unless you have a specific need for the Pro-Fit, such as frequent changes in exposure suit, I'd recommend the Hogarthian. The Hogarthian Harness take a bit more time to adjust, and get used to, but most adapt pretty quickly.

Regarding weighting;

My recomendations for all first time BP&W users is to first determine your total weighting, i.e. eyelevel at the surface, full tank, no gas in the wing. This is best done in a pool or hanging off the dock etc. Add or subtract weight until you are neutral.

Remember that your current BC is likely 3-5 lbs positive, and the SS backplate is 5 lb s negative, so you may already be loosing 8-10 lbs off your belt.

After you get your total weighting nailed you can play around with trim weighting. Having some ankle weights or other temporary clip on weights lets you find out where the weight should be. You may find more weight higher on your torso helps get you horizontal. If so our bolt weights might be a good idea. You might find using a conventional weight belt is all you need. Everybody's different.

I personally use our weight plates + ~ 6lbs in a weight belt when diving single steel tanks.

Lots of folks want to avoid using a weight belt, and a 20-30 belt is a PITA, but it your belt is only a few pounds it's no big deal.

Hope this helps,

What are the reasons for getting a hog harness? I know the "point of faliure" one and don't really think its that big of a deal. I have read that it is pretty much impossible to get out of the hog underwater, I don't really like that either. What are the advantages? I will be using a 7mil wesuit...occasionally a dry suit, and then going on vaction to the tropics a bit also.

Thanks for the help

What does PITA stand for?

Properly adjusted you can get out a Hogarthian harness in the water. It's actually easier in the water, as the water supports the weight.

The advantages are less cost, easy to replace your self, simple, rugged.

I've had mine on and off in the ocean with doubles and a can light etc. You need to plan ahead a bit, and practice helps but it's certainly doable.

The adjustable harness is easier to adjust, and if you were routinely switching between say a 1 mil tropical suit and a 7 mm cold water suit the Hog will require more effort to adjust.

BTW, for travel the Hogs about a 1lbs lighter than the Pro-Fit.
