i was wondering for warmth in keeping my head warm. which would be better goldcore or hyperstretch

notes:
would be used for water temsp from 45 and above

I read somewhere recently that metal in wetsuits is little more than a marketing gimmick. Primary heat loss is by conduction, not radiation.

which one's cheaper?

I've used a 5mm Hyperstretch in low 50's water temps with no problems. The Hyperstretch hood is probably the most comfortable hood on the market. I think you can figure out which way I'm leaning on this topic.

Hi Scubatooth:

Can't tell ya much about the hyperstretch hoods for warmth but, for the 45de + water in which you will be diven in I have used a 7mill goldcore wetsuit hood in similar cold water conditions and had no trouble with my head staying warm. What is nice about the hood is that it is so easy to put on and also to take off.

The best avice is to try both and than decide.

Which hood fits you best should be the determining factor. A poorly fitting hood, even if the material is the latest supper dooper NASA technological breakthrough for insulating astronauts camping out on Pluto, isn't going to keep you as warm as a plain hood that stops waterflow around your head.

Mind you, I used a $2 space blanket for the first time when tent camping in Oregon a few weeks ago - TOASTY!

The biggest benefit of a Goldcore is derived from the seal it makes with your skin (very little water transfer if it fits well). This works for your body, but not for your head (unless you are bald).

I dive a 7/5 Goldcore, but use a 5/3 Hyperstretch hooded vest.

My wife has a 7 mil hyperstrech hood, but if she tucks it in, she breaks the suit's neck seal. She has started using a hooded vest as well.

You mention how if she tucks the hood in, it ruins the neck seal... Does this mean that the hooded vest she wears doesn't somehow? Would it not also run under the neck seal?

The reason I was asking is because I have a Mares Isotherm with a neck seal, and I was contemplating a hooded vest for added warmth, but I didn't know how that would affect the neck seal.

Boogie711,

My wife wears her hooded vest on the outside of her wetsuit (no neck seal issues).

I wear my hooded vest on the outside of my Goldcore (because of its great sealing), but when I wear my 3 mil hyperstrech, I wear the hooded vest on the inside.

My goal is to minimize water transfer. . . some combinations work better than others. It pays to experiment, but I think any suit with a "slick" interior should not be compromised with hoods or hooded vests that break the neck seal.

P.S. When I say "neck seal" I don't mean the kind of seal you get with a dry suit or semi-dry, I just mean "the seal at the neck".
