In some of the canyons I fish, there are "prospectors". They fall into two general categories (please indulge the hyperbole for story sake):

1) Yukon Cornelius
Excentric, flannel, double-layered jeans, boots. Dusty. Beard required. Shovel, pans, 3-legged dog named "Lucky". Chews, spits, digs. I fish the stream / river, and as I pass, I get a look, a raised eyebrow, and maybe a grunt. He has a sidearm someplace, I know it. In Alaska, this guy would be a sourdough. Sort of. I'm uneasy around this guy.

2) Creepy Scuba Man
This is the guy who somehow packed in a generator, an innertube or other flotation device, miles of dryer hose and lots of muddy Rube Goldberg machinery...stuff that huffs, puffs and chews & spits for him. A lot of gear. A preposterous amount of stuff that makes a lot of noise. Often wears a wet suit. In the summer heat. This guy scares me.

Its interesting that we both (fishermen & gold hunters) sort of co-exist in the same watersheds. I've spent years and years around these guys - and they are a breed apart for sure. If this rocks your boat, rock on. I'll just stroll on by and keep fishing.

Just two weeks ago, I sold my old Oceanic Wetsuit booties on eBay (as I'm diving Rock Boots these days.) The guy that bought them is planning on wearing them as he pans for gold.

Don't laugh - I wear a pair of Oceanic 5mm booties when gold panning. The water was 48F in the American River last weekend.

It was in the south but not SC or AL. I don't remember the year but it was quite a while before the 1849 in CA.

Is there a prize if I get it right?

I thought it was in 1840 in Dalonaga, GA.

Too much crapola in the brain. Make it stop.

It was 1803, according to this site: http://www.klondike-gold.com/facts.htm

1787 First US gold coin is struck by Ephraim Brasher, a goldsmith.

1803 North Carolina site of first US gold rush. The state supplies all the domestic gold coined for currency by the US Mint in Philadelphia until 1828.

1848 California gold rush begins when James Marshall finds specks of gold in tailrace of John Sutter's sawmill near the junction of the American and Sacramento Rivers.

1850 Edward Hammong Hargraves, returning from California, predicts he will find gold in Australia within one week. He discovers gold in New South Wales within one week of landing.

1886 George Harrison, while digging stones to build a house, discovers gold in South Africa.

1887 Glasgow doctors, Robert and William Forrest, and chemist John S. MacArthur patent the process for extracting gold from ore using cyanide.

1896 Two prospectors discover gold while fishing in the Klondike River in northern Canada, richer finds were rumored farther south in Alaska's Yukon, spawning the Alaska Gold Rush in 1898 -- the last gold rush of the century.

1900 US adopts the gold standard for its currency.

I gotta go diving, man.
