This will be our first overseas dive vacation after getting certified, and we can't wait!

Two questions:
1) I know weather is kinda the luck of the draw, but what kind of weather can I expect in mid December?
2) I read up on some dive sites in Sipadan. Can anybody recommenda any "must go" dive sites?

Hi Galun,

Expects some passing showers but that should not affect the diving very much.

I remembered my favourite dive site to be Barracuda Point where there are a huge
school of swirling vortex of chevron barracuda on one side & another
huge school of jacks on the other....simply breathtaking!! but a friend who just got back emailed me yesterday that he didn't see the schools at Barracuda Point. He did mentioned that Drop-Off being the best dive as there are almost everything there, sharks, huge school of jacks, turtles, great barracuda, ghost pipefish... He also said that South Point was a disappointment, used to be a fantastic site to see white-tips & gray reef sharks & if you are lucky, hammerheads but he said only saw one leopard shark..

Hope you'll get lucky. Safe diving & have a blast :-)

Btw, if you're staying at Seaventure (Oil Rig), the house reef is incredible too.

Happy Bubbles,
Jovin-

My favorite Sipadan dive sites Barracuda Point, Hanging Garden, South Point, Turtle patch
Mabul Favorite dive sites Seaventure house reef, Lobster wall, Eal Garden, Ray point.

Good dive!

Thanks for the replies. My wife and I will be spending 5 diving days with Borneo divers. We bought a package for 20 dives (3 boat trips during the day and 1 sunset dive every day). Hopefully that will be enough dives to see Sipadan!

Done 3 dives + 2 snorkeling at Sipadan through these years. Yes, Barracuda Point and Drop-Off are *the* place. My dive at South Point was quite non-descript (but you can still see sharks and stuff)

If you are cave or cavern certified and can talk your guide into it, the turtle cave is a must. I was not able to go because I was the only caver in our group. On Mabul, there is a dive right off BD (need a boat) called Paradise II. I saw two basketball sized giant frogfish less than 20 yards apart. Wonderful!

Yeah I know about the turtle cave, but we are not cave certified, and at this point we are not sure if we want to (we are still pretty new divers!). I did email Borneo divers and they said they need to get special guides from Tawau to do it. The cost will probably be significant unless there is a group of cave divers.

Anyways, it just might be another reason to go back to Sipadan in the future!

Borneo Divers good environment's, good foods and enthusiasm staffs.
You only can do 3 dives a days, Kapalai was great dive sites too.
Good dives!

I actually preferred mabul to sipadan: lots of nice macro: frog fish, ribbon eels, ghost pipefish, mandarin fish, etc...

I guess I get turtle fatigue fairly quickly...

Cheers,
Rohan.
