Hello G,
Cancun and Cozumel are DIFFERENT types of dives, Cancun has to offer great dives full of life at 33ft. 55ft. and the wrecks at 75ft. Cancun as well has the underwater museum. When asking opinions be ready to look at various opinions, some divers have not dove Cancun only Cozumel, others had a great experience on one or both.
Cozumel´s greatness are the edge of the walls where amazing coral reef develops and these formations are fantastic and at some places really huge beautiful coral heads can be admired on the deep. These walls are located at 80ft to 120ft. These are abyssal walls and at times current can be a peril.

I have seen divers with less than 15 dives experience dive Cozumel and do great. I have seen divers with many years experience and thousands of dives not have such a great time due to weather conditions current etc.

Our service provides personalized attention and even if 1 diver we provide a private service for the same prices as going with a group.

We as well provide whale shark snorkeling services, we have been operating from Cancun for the last 10 years now. Going out of Cancun, avoids having to take a ferry to Isla Mujeres. Our boats are based at Isla Mujeres and we do have an office there, as well as an office in Cancun and a couple of docks to provide this service closer to the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Happy Diving

Agree with your choice to hold off on Cozumel. If you are a newbie, Coz is not a good choice. The drift diving is pretty intense and possibly disorienting. I would worry about newbies getting swept away. Drift diving is considered a specialty by PADI. And if you're not drift diving, then it's not worth the hassle to get to Coz from mainland.

By the way, I'm also going to Cancun in June (actually Azul Beach resort near Puerto Morelos). I'm also deciding between local diving and Cozumel. I have about 50 dives, AOW, nitrox, and wreck cards with some night, cenote, and drift diving experience. If I can leave my non-diving wife and kids behind for about two dive days during the week, what dives should I do? I've done the cenotes so I'm thinking one day in Cozumel and one day locally to see what there is near Puerto Morelos. Any advice on operators and dive sites is most welcome. (Hope I'm not hijacking the thread since that's what the OP wanted also).

Does anyone know if June is low season? Will it be easy to book dive trips last minute? For Coz I'll probably book ahead of time with Aldora but I have no knowledge of PM area operators. I don't need a fancy boat. Backwards roll with no ladder are fine with me!

That being said - my advice is to skip Cozumel. You're a brand new diver, if you dive in a mud puddle you're going to be excited.

......diving in a mud puddle......good one. true and funny.

Wow I'll be in Cancun in June too. I'm taking my oldest DD for her 21st birthday to get her Open Water certification.

Looks like we'll be snorkeling with Whale Sharks! Thanks for sharing - not sure I would have known about it otherwise.

do they have racoons in Cancoon?

they had lots in playa.....lol
