Yeah, that's the picture I was looking at.

I was debating signing up for a boat dive. I think I'll pass this time - looks like there's plenty of shore diving to keep me busy.

Did you check into any charters while you were there?

No, I didn't. But, MBDC had a sign advertising one right by the door, so they can tell you about them. When I stopped by to say goodby my last day, I told them I'd be interested in the boat dives next time I go out there.

Ken

I've dove as cold as 36*F in a wetsuit, so low 50s is not a problem.

:shocked2: I'm not going to say a word. Not. A. Word.

I can't vouch for typical size, this was my first time seeing them. But, there were definitely some in there more than 1 foot.

1 - 1.5ft long is pretty typical, some are shorter, a few are larger. It's pretty cool seeing colony after colony sprouting from the widely spaced-out boulders out there. Underwater cauliflower.

There's quite a bit of good shore diving here to keep you busy on a typical trip out. If you can, make reservations at Point Lobos State Reserve (Point Lobos State Reserve - Scuba) a little in advance of your trip (it's about 7 miles from Monterey and you'll need your c-card and a buddy to get in, and all your fills for the day as there's no shop on-site).

If you're looking for dive boats, a number of them do go out on weekends - off the top of my head, there's the Monterey Express, the Cypress Sea, Beach Hopper II and Escapade. You can find more information on them here: California Dive Boats : The Official Page, and also, Chuck Tribolet has a good page for bay area diving resources here: Ba_diving Website - Information about Northern California diving

I'm not sure Gombessa believes you about the 36 deg in a wetsuit, but since I have a couple of 39* in my log book, I do. This summer we saw 43 deg in a little inland lake - in JULY. That was kind of a shock.

Gombessa: Thanks for the links. The Cypress Sea looks like it might be pretty comfortable during the SI's.

I have a picture of 3 of us during an ice diving class, 2 in dry suits, one in wet suit. I was NOT the one in the wet suit in that instance, so there are people that dive wet when even I dive dry. I'll see if I can't add that photo to my photo gallery on here.

You going to Gilboa to do the New Years Day dive tomorrow? I'll be there.

Nope, not me. I'm a wimp.

I called ScubaToys today to try to talk them down further on that 2007 Bare Nex Gen they've had for $550 for a long time. They weren't biting.

My wife and I were in monterey, in october. We dove on the beach hopper 2, and the cypress sea. Captain and crew were great on both boats, but the cypress had air and nitrox fills on board, and tanks were included in the trip cost. Plus the cabin is really warm when the wind is blowing. They also have hot water on deck to warm up cold wet divers. Captain Phil is cool too.

No I believe you guys, I'm just amazed at your cold tolerance. I've been in a wetsuit in 46F once and I was blue on the second dive.

In my limited boat diving in Monterey, I'd have to say that Cypress Sea is my fav, for all the reasons Yrth mentioned. They're very generous on fills and have a diver-friendly (and doubles-friendly) attitude. Also, a good marine head and low dive step/ramp makes getting back on easy in rough seas.

Cold tolerant ? Maybe Ken is cold tolerant but when it gets down into the low 40's I'm freezing.

A warm cabin and good marine head - sounds like my kind of boat. Does that mean I'm getting old ?
