Got out today for a dive at the Gloucester Breakwater. It was my first time at the site and I'm definitely going back again. We parked at the parking lot and practically walked right in and dove the inside. We were considering diving the outside but due to the entry and boat traffic decided to do the inside.

Conditions were great, 18-20 ft viz and the temp at 19ft was a balmy 41-43. We dove for 40 minutes stopping halfway to float on the surface before going back down and heading back (I was wet and used it to warm up)

There were a few crabs and one lone bug. TONS of anemones, they seemed to be in every crack that I looked into. This is one of my new favorite spots, but I'm thinking that due to fishermen during the summer it would be mainly an early or late season location. It would probably make for a great night dive but parking would be an issue as the lot "closes" at dusk. There was a lot of trash at the bottom; tons of tires, fish crates, plastic bags, bottles and the like. Next time I go I'm probably going to be bringing a catch bag to fill with trash.

Do you have to pay for parking, and can you park on weekends?

Must be a pretty big bag to pick up tires!:D

there is a sign that says parking is $5 from Memorial Day on. I'm not sure if they enforce if or what :dontknow: It is free however if you are a Mass Audubon member. If you dive it during the summer the key is to get there EARLY as I've seen the lot full by 10am.

Is this fact posted? I am in fact a member (or rather my son is), but without reading this board would I know about free parking? Is there any other place in/around Gloucester where Mass Audubon membership gets you free parking?

there is a sign in the parking lot with the parking information. The reason that there is free parking is that the lot is managed by Mass Audubon and not by the city. I don't think that there are other places in town, but you never know.

What is the exact address? I tried googling "Gloucester breakwater" and found a lot of pretty photographs, but no clear indication WHERE it is.
