I'm thinking of going to Solomon islands this fall with a friend. But can't decide between Gizo or Munda for a few days of diving. We really love wrecks. We want to be land based - it seems like the hotel options are better in Gizo - but what about the diving? Where would we see the most wrecks? Which has better diving?

Also - is it worth spending a day to dive off of Honiara? We plan to spend two days there seeing wwii sites on land.

Thanks!

I went to Honiara, Gizo and Munda in 2009. I did one wreck dive in Honiara before heading out to the islands. Honiara was good but Gizo and Munda were awesome. If you have time then try and squeeze in both. Staying at Fatboys and diving with Gizo was pretty cool. Although that depends on budget too. Munda was my favourite based on the two. Munda was pretty much untouched and I haven't found anywhere that I have enjoyed as much since. We did lots of wrecks on the trip that blew my mind. Anyways 2009 was a while ago so maybe things have changed since then. I am planning to go back this year.

Munda was my favorite as well & Dive Munda there was absolutely fantastic. They were the best dive shop I've ever been with. And Munda has great wrecks! They keep on finding new things every year as well which is crazy. It's one of the few places I'm seriously considering going back to (which I rarely do since there are so many great dive locations to explore).

I stayed at the Agnes Gateway Hotel (sometimes called the Agnes Lodge) on Munda. At first, I was in one of their budget rooms because they had no availability the 1st day I was there. The budget room was definitely akin to a low-mid budget motel albeit a clean one. The rest of the time, I stayed in one of their "fancy" rooms & it was much better. Not fancy in how I from nyc or you from Southern California probably think of as fancy, but solidly/decently nice.

I stayed at Fatboys & dove Gizo from there as @Scottishandrew did. Fatboys was wonderful, but I would easily give up Fatboys to dive the island of Munda even if I had to stay in the budget room at Agnes the entire time.

Gizo is great, some excellent wrecks and airplanes. Not been to Munda. Honiara has some great wreck diving, right off the shore. Well worth doing. If you are coming all the way from USA, it would be a waste to not dive there as well. See my web site articles about the wrecks and diving there Michael McFadyen's Scuba Diving Web Site
