I've no problem diving with a newly certified diver, sometimes they can teach us a thing or two aswell!!
As mentioned, ignore the mug from your lds and go somewhere else. The dive industry is a big one, but unfortunatley its also full of pompus big headed muppets like the one you spoke to ;)

Being an instructor, most of my dives are with "Newbies". When I go to club events, etc. they want to dive with me or one of the certified divemasters. Our motto "Bring it on" we are out there to teach, help you gain experience and knowledge. But don't get upset if we criticize or critique your diving. We figure that's why you want to dive with us.

I save my vacations and special weekend trips for diving with "experienced divers", and if a rookie wants to "tag along" I tell them to "Bring It On."

thanks for your replies. after again reading my opening statement, mt intention was not to offending anyone, i just found the situation very disheartening.

i have another shop a few hours from home and there are a few near the area's i intend on diving, so no problems...

i love diving and something i will hopefully share with my family as they become ready to dive.

i can't wait to get into the water again, only 7 more days..

Depends on the dive:

In a quarry, lake, or shore dive that I haven't paid for the time and am just fooling around, I am much like Walter and the others. I am not as thrilled about some of the things that will excite a newer diver and get some of that back by watching the reactions of my dive budy.

On a boat with reasonable dives, again I don't have a problem. I have helped set up trips for relatively new OW divers with the Great Lakes Wrecking Crew on this board as a matter of fact and had a great time.

So, yes, I love diving with newer divers and teaching. But please don't expect me to hold a newer diver's hand on a more advanced dive that I had pay good money to get out there on. If you want to learn to do those dives so that we can BOTH have some decent bottom time and a stress free dive, do the simpler dives dives first and build up your experience. I'll even do them with you when I find the time. But, I HATE rescues, LOL.

If you ever get out my way (central Michigan), give me a holler!

Today at a dive shop the salesperson and I were having a great conversation about area dives. We talked about where and when, and that I was more than welcome to join them. When i told him I was a newly certified diver he sort of shrugged and asked "Well where have you dove?". When i stated that I had only done 2 dives after my certification, his tone changed. He stated "Oh you're brand new, well you and your buddy will have to visit our dive sites", he walked away and disappeared into the office..

Well, I wouldn't worry too much about someone who says things like: "Wer hev you dove?" anyway! Sounds like the guy in the movie "Deliverance"!

Don't give the guy space in your head rent free. If he works for a dive shop, I'd find a more congenial dive shop! After all, all of us were newbies at one time. (Some were newbies a lot longer ago than others, and may have slept since then and forgotten that fact! :11: )

Welcome to the sport! There are lots of good people and good places to dive out there. Enjoy!! ;)

For my own part, I often prefer diving with new diver buddies, if the dive isn't going to be too challenging anyway. I find that their buddy skills tend to be significantly better. FWIW

I love diving with new divers. Oh yea that's right, I am a new diver. So that makes every dive a dive with a new diver for me.

Seriously though, to you experienced people that put up with our newbie crap, thank you for your time and dedication.

Snowbear honey you're in Alaska, I think the newbies may be looking for slightly warmer water ;) I understand the diving up there is really nice though.

Do you always bring that 6 foot moray out as an alternate dive buddy? I must admit having it swim alongside me was a thrill.

I too enjoy diving with new divers, that's why I teach. There is just something about watching someone's first time in the open water that always makes me smile.

Me too ... there's something satisfying about seeing someone get excited about the things more experienced divers take for granted. There's also something VERY satisfying about watching a diver improve from one dive to the next ... :D
