Be careful of these so called deals. As someone pointed out, it's just for the instruction and not the materials. Don't forget, in order to take the class, you will need mask, snorkel, fins, booties, and gloves (an easy $200 or so). Materials: Book, dive tables, boat trip, PADI paperwork~ probably another $200 or so.....

Re basic gear, find the gear that best fits you, not what Sport Chalet wants to sell you. Check your LDS and Sport Chalet to make sure the gear is what best fits YOUR needs.

If you are all serious about diving, you will want to buy your own gear after getting certified...it is what will keep you diving. Keep in mind, the beach is always FREE!

Best of luck!

Jan is correct about the extra costs. They are spelled out at the top of Sport Chalet's class schedule flyers.

She's also correct about finding gear that fits you. If you take an open water class at Sport Chalet, during the orientation the instructor will spend some time showing you different gear options and telling you how they should fit. You see, the instuctor doesn't make a penny extra if you the most expensive mask in the store, but it sure will mess up his or her class if that mask doesn't fit you right.

Walter:
I've yet to hear of a quality instructor offer such a deal.
Sport Chalet instructors have nothing to do with the cost of the course. We just show up and teach whoever signed up, and get paid the same rate per diver regardless of what the students paid for tuition. I don't care what a student paid for the class, I'm still going to give them the same quality of instruction. Any instructor who wouldn't should not be teaching.

I signed up for 1/2 price scuba lessons when a new sport chalet opened in my neighborhood. I had (and still have) an awsome instructor. I'd reccommend "shopping" around for instructors. Watch a pool session, get roccomendations. The price should be secondary to the quality of instruction that you're using for life support!

I know we offer OW for 349.00 and that includes books, tuition, the boat to and from catalina, hotel for Sat. night in Catalina (not the hermosa). but not the personnal gear (mask, snorkel, booties, fins, gloves)
