has anyone dived the Gili Islands in Lombok. How was the stay and the dive?

Hey Dave,

There is already a ton information about The Gili Islands and North Bali in this forum. Search Gili Air or Gili T and all you need to know is there.

That being said, the Gilis, especially Gili Air, are a special place...perhaps my most favorite destination in all of Indonesia to chill, dive a little, hang with friends, and just enjoy life. The diving is hardly the best Indonesia has to offer, so if you are not with a bunch of hardcore divers, the Gilis are perfect: decent diving, great snorkeling for beginners, warm water, yoga, fitness, good restaurants, places to party, amazing sunsets, kayaks/SUPs, no motorbikes, etc..

Hope that helps.

Hey! Im a Hoosier too. After 25 years I left Indianapolis after college for the ocean... I doubt Indiana misses me either. :) Feel free to hit me up as you plan you trip here. I am happy to offer some ideas and insight. Cheers.

We have stayed and dived with Manta on Gili Air many times and love it there. The coral was recovering well , but there had been some bleaching in the last year. However since 2011, every time we have been there the fish life has been better than the previous time. There are also masses of turtles.

I stayed there late last year, and stayed / dived with Blue Marlin.

- Overall, BM are a pretty good dive op, but they seem to mainly cater to backpacker's / holiday divers - so, interpret that as you like.

- BM's onsite accommodation is awesome though - they just built a series for rooms out the back and they are excellent, although you'll obviously pay more than the usual small hotel prices on GA. Their restaurant and onsite bar is pretty good too.

- The diving is good if you're not too ambitious and easily pleased - in fact, the house reef was a highlight as was the night dive on the house reef. The site 'Turbo reef' is the highlight - make sure you do it. Turtles all over the place, and it does seem to have made a pretty good recovery after years of reef bombing.

- Overall, a cool place to hang, dive and drink beers - just be aware the island is mainly young backpackers.

But when I was with Manta in February there was a boat full of experienced ( 50 to 650 dive each and over 45 years ) every day for a week. Looking back though my logbook , I saw more sharks one some dives that I had on five days diving on previous trips.

I visit Gili T for 4nights recently diving was super easy to organise. I had my gear with me as I had spent 4 days diving in Bali. I check into my hotel wondered down to the beach found the first dive shop that didn't look too busy, checked the reviews. Sat down had a chat with one of DMs filled out the normal forms. Rest of my stay I showed up for the dives I wanted and paid my bill at the end. Diving is fix price on Gili's everyone charges the same discounts for own gear and multiple days if diving.
