I might have to look into that place some time down the road. Is there much to see there, or just someplace to dive deep to say you have been deep?
The deep side is one half of the quarry. At the deep side entry, Mike has training platforms at depth, deco bars, and a couple of boats and truck trailer on the bottom. The rest of the deep side doesn't see much action, but is neat as you can find and follow the old road and the sump area which is the deepest part of the quarry @147'.

My point in posting this wasn't to question Mike or his rules, merely to ask what others have experienced there lately. I've heard too many unsubstantiated rumors and have to consider the source in some cases.

I read somewhere that Gilboa has the deepest water in the state of Ohio. For anyone else that hasn't been there, the quarry is a nicer facility than any other quarry in the area. There are wood docks with elevated gear tables at several entry points, stairs for entry and exit in the water, enclosed bathrooms with hot showers. As far as the deep side, I've never been below 120 but it is cold and dark, truly another world. There aren't too many other places to experience this enviroment that have the added safety of platforms with ascent lines and a lack of current. I know people that have been over 150 feet in the tropics that don't do well at 100 feet in Gilboa.

Gilboa is really nice, if you ask me. They've got hot showers! Mike maintains the place very well and is a stickler for one to follow all safety rules. That's OK with me. The shallow side has all sorts of 'stuff' to check out. A big jet on it's landing gear that you can very comfortably swim through. The bottom there is 35-35 feet with the fuselage at about 25 feet. The deep side is clear but cold. There are several entry points and they're quite busy. If you get the chance I'd recommend that you go during the week because weekends are really busy most of the time. They have a thing called "Vertical Reality" which is a climbing wall and lots of places to repel. They even have a really long cable where one can slide down into the quarry.
It's fun to watch. Would love to do it if I ever get the nerve up.
Give the place a visit sometime. There are several motels 15 miles to the east and lots of places to camp onsite.
