Well, from what I know of Humboldt squid, I wouldn't have been picking them up off the beach and carrying them back into the water. Humboldt have a serious reputation for being aggressive, and for not being too terribly picky about what they consider "food".

Fortunately for swimmers and divers, they also spend most of their time waaaaaaaaay below the maximum depths humans play at.

The main issue is that the stupid squids are shy, and didn't want to show up last dive!

Larry is a mad man ... dude caught that 53" - 50.65lb Yellowtail off his kayak in December 05 off of scripps pier .. you should read his story on that one ... He actually targets threshers on his yak ... insane.

Targets threshers on a yak... sounds like a real *ssh*le to me.

Yes the Humboldts are for real, and they've moved north into Orange County.

Are they dangerous? Potentially... sharp cutting beaks and "toothed" sucker disks. So far their behavior seems to be largely inquisitive, but they have been known to carry fishermen to their death in Mexico.

Dr Bill I'll just stick with nuts at this point ... not sure why these folks fish for threshers off their yaks ... other than they are trying to display their machismo ... or maybe they are just what you said ...

Can't believe it... the Humboldt squid was the lead-in on ABC's Good Morning America (but I'm still waiting for the actual story).
