Hello,

My travel arrangements to Grand Cayman are June 7-11 (Thurs-Monday) - giving me 3 full days of diving. The problem is it appears the most practical way of getting to Little Cayman is via a flight. Since that would effectively leave me only a single day to dive, I wonder what options (if any) I have with getting to Little Cayman to dive (if even for just a day trip). I've read online that there may be charter boats but I haven't been successful in finding anything myself.

So, my questions are:

  1. Is it even possible to get to Little Cayman and dive via boat on the same day?
  2. If not the same day, has anyone had experience with a chartered service that would provide drop-off one day and pickup the next?
  3. Are there outfits based on Grand Cayman that do day-trips to Little Cayman?

Any other suggestions would be helpful - thanks!

1. Yes. I once took the late afternoon flight over and did a night dive the same day (they waived the checkout dive).

2. Don't know of one but you could check with Island Air.

3. Not day trips, but InDepth WaterSports will do 2-day trips (for a price).

To the best of my knowledge no day trips to LC are available. Island Air/Cayman Airways Express via the Otter is your only option to get to LC unless you have a small private plane.

I would think that if you took the earliest morning flight to LC you may could easily do an afternoon dive with an outfit over there. May even get in two dives.

LCBR usually does 2 morning dives and 1 afternoon dive. Pirates Point doesn't offer afternoon dives. I am not sure what Southern Cross offers.

The way I read the original post all three questions were refering to travel by boat to and from LC......maybe I misread it.

Most definitely possible to fly in and dive the same day.

The Twin Otter flights fly at pretty low altitudes, though I am unsure what those altitudes are and don't wish to misinform you. I know some who calculate their no fly time based on their jet flight out of GC.

In depth Watersports may represent a good option for you. They will do a short trip to LC from GC via their boat, a navy RMB which can move a bit faster than most.

I have done a Thu to Sun flying CA and diving two days. You might be able to squeeze an afternoon or night dive on the day of arrival. Do not plan on flying the same day as diving, at least if you are flying CA. The distance from GC to LC is approx 90 miles - that is a long boat ride and not one you are going to do back and forth same day.

On several of the twin otter flights I have been on, I was able to see the cockpit instruments, and we reached altitudes of around 7500-8000 feet. The cabin is not pressurized, so please be VERY cautious about planning short no-fly intervals if you plan to dive and fly back to GC. I would just say this...the diving on LC is very good...but I am not sure it is good enough to be worth riding many hours on a boat back and forth from GC in a 2 or 3 day span for one day of diving there. You are better off just planning a trip there sometime and enjoy your time on GC for this trip.
