hey,

I'm attempting to figure how the best way for me to really get into the diving. I'm a poor college student with a year and a half before I graduate from a school in upper upper state NY. I got my certificatin this summer while doing research at a school in Texas a few hours from my parents house. I managed to squeeze in a dive during a physics conference I was at in Maui a couple months ago, but other than that haven't dove since my cert dives in June. I really want to get more into diving because I had so much fun this summer. Any tips on how to do that?

Clarkson have a dive group as part of their outdoor club? Otherwise, it's drysuit season up here.

Where there is a will there is a way.

Got a job? Got room for two of them? Considered knocking off a bank? Hold off on the bank, 7-11 is a better hit and not a federal rap. :D

Watch him here... Gary's just looking for someone to arrest.... (he's a deputy).

Besides. 7-11's just aren't that great to knock off anymore since everyone
now does "pay at the pump".

Hit a movie theatre on Saturday night. With movies at $8 each and the
prices they charge for refreshments, you could walk away with several grand cash.

Sorry, I forgot about pay at the pump. Wait for a Big Gulp sale then hit them when the machine is almost empty. :D That should be good for a BC and time off for being a good little boy.

You just about told my story from when I got certified except I was in school in Ohio, and did a dive while on a research trip to the Bahamas.

1. Buy your gear- It was about $100 for me to rent gear for a weekend, I bought good gear (some pieces I am still using 8 years later) spent about $2K and figured I had paid for it when I hit 20 dives..... made me dive a little more.

2. Find some people to dive with. You have made a good start by finding SCUBA Board. (I wish I had found something like this when I started diving). You might want to go to the geographic clubs area of here and try to meet up with them for some dives. Might see if the LDS has some sort of dive schedule too, or try to set up a dive club at your college.

3. You should look into taking some more classes (AOW or Nitrox are good next steps). That is how I met dive buddies until I found this board.

You might also look into some summer programs that can get you diving. Things like Broadreach http://www.gobroadreach.com/ Seacamp www.seacamp.org are always looking for college students to work for them.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll pass on robbing anything or anyone because it just isn't nice to take other people's hard earned money (though it was amusing to read the posts about it). I think once I get back to school (I'm on co-op at the moment) I'll see if I can contact the dive shop about 30 miles from school and see what they have if anything. While I finish up my bachelors I'm not sure how much diving I can do, but I definately don't want to loose what little skill I have. Plus the little I've been underwater, I've loved it. Again thanks :-)

That is very good to have a big eager to reach what you want. You can check a dive centre at Red Sea or Bali which have an"internship" program. You can continue your diving, work, feel the experience and perhaps continue until you can earn money while you enjoy your hobby.
I will send a good luck for you...everyday..
