I made a rattle from 3/4 copper pipe with a nut inside. I also soldered a brass cotter pin, but on the end and not the middle. This way it hangs downward with the nut in the small end, and does not make noise unless you turn it sideways to shake.

I have travelled with it a few times, but it has always caugh the attention of the screeners. It has always gotten through however.

diverdizzy:
UPDATE ON MY SHAKER. I just got back from my trip to Roatan, Honduras. I decided to "check-in" the noise maker along with the rest of the dive gear. I made a sticker with a Dymo label make that said "Buddy Alert", attached the shaker to the BC and stuck it in the BC pocket. I flew from Dallas, TX with a change in Houston, then on to San Pedro Sula, La Ceibo, Utilia and then to Roatan. I had absolutely no problems with this or any of the other scuba gear. They did look in my reg bag in San Pedro Sula on the return, but that was only a 30 second delay. TSA did inspect the dive gear bag both ways as there was a notice inside the dive bag. But in the end this item did not seem to bother any of the security people.

I made a shaker myself. Instead of metal though I used a PVC sprinkler pipe extension (about 10 inches long), put some nuts into it then sealed both ends with end caps. I wrapped the exterior with nylon cord and buried a loop into the wrap. Works great! And it can be totally x-rayed without it looking like a pipebomb. Only problem is that it tends to float. Oh well, if you want a professional job, hire a professional!

I've bought a Trident Tank Banger from scubatoys. US$ 7
I was amazed of the different noise it does on the surface and underwater.
