I made a shaker last weekend for getting my buddies attention.

I used a 1" X 2" bronze bushing with a 7/16" nut inside and soldered 0.025" brass sheet on the ends (yes, I used lead free solder) and a copper loop in the middle to mount it to the BC. I sanded the solder joints smooth and painted it whte.

I looks and works great. My only question is whether the TSA is going to confiscate it from my checked bags? It does have resemblence to a pipe bomb, although it is evident that it is empty with a metal piece inside.

It is not really any different than the one by Trident at Scubatoys except it is shorter and fatter and the cord mounts to the middle.

Does anybody think I am going to have a probem with this?

Totally depends on who's on duty that day. I would venture to guess that it would be confiscated. But that's just me.

If at all in doubt, you may want to leave it at home. I'd hate for you to have to hand over your equipment, or worse get delayed and miss your flight.

We're headed to Cozumel in a few weeks and I had a similiar concern for the silica dessicant I use in my camera housing. It's packed in a sealed fiber bag that looks like a 1/4 kilo of cocaine (I only know this from my days of watching Miami Vice...). I need to look up "dessicant" in Espanol!

Oh... I just saw the picture of your noise maker. It looks to be small enough they may not even notice it. Looks neat.

I doubt they would have a problem with that.

But if you are unsure, carry it on the plane. When you go through the X-ray machine, it will be clear as day that it is empty.

Um, I think that would be "desecante".

I think I would carry it on. At least you would have the oppurtunity to explain what it is. It may not help but I guess it would be chicken soup.

I would not carry anything on a plane I was unsure of. (if it looks like a bomb, acts like a bomb) I would leave it at home. Just because you make it through the x-ray machine doesn't mean the trip is over. Can you imagine someone seeing that thing who's already paranoid about flying? :11:

Good thread as I just made a shaker myself out of some copper pipe.
