getting an 11 y/o certified

Hello,
can anyone point me to information discussing why it is ok, not dangerous, for an 11 y/o to get certified? Non diver wife is concerned and resisting. Son is 6 yr swim team participant, plays other sports yr round so he is in great shape. He is 5'2'', 95lb.

My daughter was certified at 12.She grew up in the Florida springs,snorkeling and so on.My wife is not a diver and never will be and wasent to crazy about the idea either.It turned out well with my new O.W dive buddy.She got cavern at 16 through NSSCDS,and is like a fish now at 18.She out dives alot of others weve been out with.I say its up to the kid.If he says yea kinda then Id wait.If hes enthused about the idea then the wife just got outvoted.IMO,open water only gives the basics for diving and leaves alot of the what ifs out.When I took cavern,Steph was too young,but I taught her everything I new and we practiced s-drills,and other scenarios,Long hose etc.When it was time for the cavern class she blew right through it.Now when were around other O.W divers she points out all their weak points,to me,with their skills and gear.Poor trim and buancy,spg's and other gear hanging,tanks sagging too low,large leg knifes[in springs]etc.
