I don't drink tap water but I'll rinse my mouth at the lake where we dive.:D Fish do stuff in there. Ever been to the ocean and gotten a mouthful of sea water? Whales do stuff in there.:06: ;) That's big stuff. Ever got a mouthful in the pool? Your siblings did stuff in there.:D Maybe your mom and dad did also! :10: Did you run to the hospital? If you did, find another sport. If not don't sweat it. Like everyone said the chlorine killed it. And you may get to swap regulator spit with someone really cute if you're lucky.:14: :D Then you'll fall in love get married have about 5 kids and not dive again till the last one goes off to college!

Depending on your agency and instructor you may only get to use your buddies alternate second stage. This item has been dragging in the hairballs on the bottom of the pool.

You're probably just as likely to get a cold from shaking hands with someone or having somebody's kid sneeze or cough on you in the grocery store.

Actively ill people generally aren't diving. The scary chronic, life-threatening illnesses are generally not transmitted through saliva. And by the time the reg has been passed through the water to you, there's a fair amount of dilution that's taken place, anyway.

I worry about sticking my hands in open wounds of strangers (I'm an ER doc) but I don't worry about breathing off someone else's regulator for a couple of minutes.

And buddy breathing as you describe it (passing reg back and forth) has not been a required OW skill for a long time. You'll just get his secondary.
Depending on the agency and instructor... A lot of people DO teach buddy breathing.

Wait until you see what else is floating around in a public pool after spending a few minutes on the bottom.:D Some of that will get in your mouth while your are doing reg switches.

What are you more worried about now?:D
