For many of you this email will be quite disturbing and we apologize. However, it is news we felt must be shared. It is with profound sadness that we inform you that George Purifoy, Owner of Olympus Diver Center and Captain of the Olympus in Morehead City, NC collapsed and passed away yesterday at the helm of his beloved Olympus.

The Olympus was inshore near the Queen Anne’s Revenge. At the time George collapsed there was a group of firemen/paramedics on board as passengers and they rendered immediate assistance. George was then taken directly to the Coast Guard Station just a few minutes away. Even with the immediate and trained assistance George could not be revived.

At this time there is no further information or details about funeral arrangements. We will share those details with you when they are announced.

George has been a good friend that we have known for almost 30 years. We watched his son Bobby grow from a sandy haired, barefoot little boy running around the docks into the young man he is today. Bobby is Captain of Olympus Dive Center’s Midnight Express. Many of you have been on his boat as well.

For those of you who knew George, we share your sadness. For those of you who never got the chance to meet George you truly missed meeting a legend. George is well known worldwide. He is credited with finding and being the first to dive the U-352.

Please keep the Purifoy family in your thoughts and prayers.

I didn't know George well, but dove with him a couple of times and had a couple of great conversations. One heck of a guy, and a diver of legendary proportions. He will be missed.

May the Lord bless and keep George beside him as he was inspired by the underwater world and the peacefullness it brought to him. Thank you George as you have brought me hours of pleasure in diving off the NC Coast. We will miss him
