I am in the market for a back inflate BC and am considering purchasing either a Genesis Recon or SP Knighthawk. I have seen a lot of posts about the Knighthawk and have tried one on in my LDS. I do like it but I want more D-rings than what the Knighthawk has to offer since I'm giving up pockets. I currently dive an Oceanic Probe and, although I like the layout I want to get away from the squeeze. I want to go a bit more "techie" but don't have the $ or time to bother with bp/w (accessorizing with pockets, weight pouches, etc, blah blah blah). I just want a aready to go BCD and want to know what the scoop is on the Genesis Recon (8 D-Rings, 75# lift, dual cam-lock tank straps, 36 lb weight intergration/26lbs user releasable, etc...). How come I don't see any posts for this bad boy?
... Anybody...?

I have a Recon and like it okay. Mine has a doubles kit w/ a stainless steel backplate and single tank adapter which let's me drop about 6 lbs off the integrated weights. I've dove it w/ and w/o the plate, and I like the plate better, but unless it comes w/ the plate (I got mine used), you won't want to buy one if you only dive singles.

If you are getting a BC for the D-rings, it has them, but they are not in the most convenient place. They are about 1/2 way between the shoulder and cumberbund, so it's difficult to clip off anything like a back-up light and still have room for some type of keeper to hold the non-bolt snap end close to the chest. The two rings on each shoulder strap are practically on top of each other so you don't really gain much extra room to clip stuff.

The bladder is also fairly big, it has some bungee straps on the side closest to your back to help keep it minimal size, but it's still pretty big.

The center pocket is fairly convenient and it is comfortable to wear. It was my first BC and I still have it, but I probably won't dive it a whole lot.

I recently purchased an Oxycheq Mach V 30# wing w/ STA and HOG harness and I like it a lot better than the Recon. It's definietly more streamlined and the D-rings are adjsutable and high on the shoulder so my back-up lights are restrained w/ a piece of bike inner tube.

Hope this helps,

John

What size are you looking for? I have mine for sale if interested....have not used it for a while now and it is looking for a good home :D

Before I went to a back plate, I dove a Knighthawk, it's a terrific BC and I still use it when I am helping with students at the LDS.

I don't know enough about the other BC to make a comparison. However, for the cost of a Knighthawk, you should be able to go with a BP/W. Actually, the BP/W will probably be less and setting one up isn't really that tough.

I dived with BP/W for about 18 dives and then decided to get a TranspacII.

The Recon is a nice Bcd but a little on the heavy side for me! You may want to look at the Zeagle Brigade it has the same type of fit... but will pack much better and you still get the Stainless Steel D-rings, now it does not have as much lift as the Recon but who needs 75 lbs of lift. If you need more lift then look at its big brother the Ranger It has 44 lbs of lift!

The latest thing on the market in sport back floatation is the Oceanic Outrigger it is made of 1600-denier ballistic nylon “tough stuff that will hold up to years of extreme diving” It has 45 lbs of lift.

Take a look and if you have any questions give me a call!

Thanks

Joe

Thank you all. I'll get to touch and try on the Recon this weekend and I'll certainly think of some of the comments in these posts. If I don't like the Recon I'll probably go with the knighthawk - not quite ready for bp/w yet... not enough time to play. Thanks all!
