I currently own this rig and have done 73 dives on it. It was a splurge gift from my girlfriend when I was certified and it seems to be a fairly decent setup (it has adjustable airflow & predive/dive settings). I am upgrading some of my equipment from my original gear (new computer, fins etc) and I was wondering what the opinion of this reg is. If I were to upgrade I owuld probably go with a Apeks of some sort.

I do almost all warm water dives with no real plans to get in any water colder than 70! Basically is this something I should look at now or is my current rig good enough until I get into more technical type diving?

I can't make an intelligent comment on your GS200 as I have never used one nor serviced one. Heck, have I even see one???

Anyway, I wouldn't purchase any technical gear until you actually get to the point where you are ready for the training. There is a wide chasm between recreational and technical diving. It is sort of like being able to fly a single engine plane doesn't necessarily mean you are ready for a jumbo jet. Being a technical diver doesn't suddenly elevate a diver to some vaulted position. Ask yourself why you want to get into the whole field. I suggest that you read everything that you can find so that you can make some wise choices. Speak to some technical divers to learn from their experience, and talk to a number of instructors being laying down any cash.

The GS2000 is an excellent reg for the diving you do now. I've gone diving in some pretty cold water (38f) with my GS2000 and it has done very well. I would stick with your GS2000 for now and when you are ready to get into technical diving move to Apeks or SP.

Safe Diving!

Thanks for the feedback guys..

Greg... I appreciate your input. I am not looking to go out and start doing deco dives on trimix next month. I believe that it makes sense to buy gear about 1 step ahead of where you are now (buying a nitrox capable computer when you first get certified, for example) so that when you make the leap you do not have to change equipment at the same time you are learning and practicing new skills.

My next challenge is Rescue diver and after that I would like to get into some of the more challenging areas like cavern, wreck penetration, etc. From what I read on this board and others, 5% of regs are crap, 90% work for 90% of the divers and dive conditions out there, and 5% are appreciably better, especially in more "technical" situations. If I have the $$ to upgrade to a equipment that is appreciably better, and I plan on moving (slowly) into more chalengin areas, then I want to make sure that my equipment is up to the task.

Thanks again for your advice and input...

No problem...You should really enjoy Rescue class. I believe that it is one of the most beneficial courses that you can enroll in.

I have been using the GS2000 for three years now and I like it quite a bit. Been down 100+ fsw with it in temps ranging from 75F to 38F and never experienced a problem during a dive. The only issue that I do have with it though is that if the predive switch isn't in the correct position before a dive it sometimes freeflows for a second or two (I just flip the swich and/or tap the purge and it stops - seems a little sensitive until it gets wet, don't know why).

Question: Do you have any info as to whether this reg is Nitorx compatible? Seems to be a confusing issue as the manufacturer says no but all dive shops and others I've spoken to say it is (that the manufacturer wants folks to buy their Oz Titanium reg for Nitrox @ $550-600). Thoughts?

I would have the demand lever adjusted a little bit, that would fix the tendancy to free flow even in the pre-dive position. As you know, the pre-dive position is the "-" position and the dive position is the "+" position, remember that diving is a Positive experience Hence the +. Also, have the intermediate pressure checked to verify its around 135 psi.

I have a GS2000 as well and have been recently exposed to repairs thru my LDS. My reg was the first one I worked on. Sherwood & Genesis are one of the easiest to work on and extremely rugged. I agree that you wont find much better than apeks but, be prepared for a MAJOR jump in price. You really have to be serious about diving and have some very high demands before that GS 2000 will no longer fill your needs. That GS will support 2 divers in a high demand situation at 100' and have plenty of delivery left over.

To answer your other question, Yes, it IS Nitrox compatable. It WILL perform equally to the OZ, the most noticable difference being the Titanium. This is only important if you dont wash off your gear in warm water after diving.

I just read your profile, your only about 45 minutes away from me. PM me if you want and I will give you directions to the LDS I go to. He can adjust it/check it out for you.

My wife uses a GS 2000, and it seems like a fine regulator.

We are both getting nitrox certified. The manual is a little confusing about whether or not it is nitrox compatible.

My LDS told me that it will work fine with nitrox but that the reg will no longer be under warranty if used with nitrox. He went on to say that the GS 2000 is fine for nitrox.

Have others heard the same?

I use the GS2000 as well and it has worked great for me. I have noticed a lot of disscussion on the nitrox readiness of this reg. Mine has a conversion kit in it now. I have heard it is unnecessary, but better safe than sorry. I beieve the kit comes from Genesis and won't void the warrenty.
I got mine at the Lds, and have store warranty on it.
But as far as performance, it seem good to me.
I know a person who has done tech diving with one and eventually sold it for a higher performance reg even though he had no problems with it.
So there you go.
Dive on and enjoy any choice you make.
